Louis Haslup Obituary

Louis Phillip "Bo" Haslup Jr., age 78, passed away on Tuesday May 21, 2024 at his home after an extended illness. He was born December 31, 1945 at Franklin Square Hospital in Baltimore MD, the son of the late Louis P. Haslup, Sr. and Anna Grace Mazzatenta Haslup. He was the husband of Wanda Frock Haslup. They had been together for 24 years and would have celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on June 2nd.

Bo was a 1963 graduate of Howard High School. He completed two years at the University of Maryland before going on to the Baltimore Police Academy as a Howard County recruit, graduating in 1969. He was promoted to First Class in 1972, Corporal in 1973, and Sergeant in 1974. Bo retired in 1996 after 27 years of service. His assignments included patrol, Criminal Investigations Bureau, and traffic enforcement. Bo was the first supervisor of the Youth Prevention Division, which eventually became the Youth Division. A recipient of multiple awards and commendations, Bo was known as a skilled supervisor, always able to handle complex delegated assignments and quickly followed up on urgent matters. He was especially noted for his youth work, regularly planning activities for Howard County youth throughout the year. This valuable police-led, youth enrichment occurred toward the beginning popularity throughout the country.

Bo grew up near Laurel Park racetrack and frequented the races with his parents who also owned thoroughbreds. He later followed in his father's footsteps and owned and bred horses that raced successfully in the Mid-Atlantic region and were raised on his Oakwood Farm in Maryland.

Bo was a member of the Woodsboro American Legion where he volunteered countless hours and was fondly known, along with his friend Joe Plunkert as the BoJo Chicken Fryers.

Surviving in addition to his wife are sister, Phyllis Haslup Pierce of WV; stepsons Brian Desel and wife Alyssa of Newnan, GA, Eric Desel of Thurmont, Ian Ozminski of Westminster, father-in-law Jerry Frock of Westminster, and brother-in-law Michael Frock and wife Gina of Westminster. Bo also leaves behind his best friend Woody Snodgrass of Thurmont and friend Suzy Haslup of Aiken, SC.

A celebration of Bo's life will be held on June 29, 2024 at the Woodsboro American Legion, 101 W. Elizabeth St., Woodsboro MD 21798 beginning at 1pm.

The Bo Haslup Memorial Race will be held June 28, 2024 Race 2 at the Charles Town Race Track, 750 Hollywood Drive Charles Town, WV 25414.

The family would like to thank the team from Frederick Health Hospice for their devoted care that was provided, especially his favorites Chrystal and April. Please consider donations in Bo's memory to Frederick Health Hospice, 1 Frederick Health Way, Frederick MD 21701

Bo, my chicken frying buddy that I put the hook in and got your involved with the legion. We had plenty of good times in the kitchen and drew in lots of extra help. We broke the barrier frying with onion rings, Arby's curly fries and made the mistake of frying cheese sticks. We all got a big laugh out of that mess. Then after getting you involved with the chicken, I got you to help put up the Christmas tree at the legion. We had a good time together. I'll miss my ol' buddy, but will have a cold one in your memory. I hope you find that hubcap you lost when you were on patrol. RIP
