Lloyd R. Westphalen, 79, of Lincoln, formerly of Fremont, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at his home.
He was born May 12, 1923, in North Bend. He moved to Fremont from North Bend in 1940. He worked at the Nebraska Ordnance Plant at Mead. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from March 3, 1943, to Dec. 14, 1945, in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theater. After he was discharged with the rank of sergeant, he returned to Fremont and owned Westphalen Construction in Fremont, and built many homes in the area. He later worked for Midwest Seat Co. in Fremont. He moved to Lincoln in 1987.
He married Irene M. McCarthy on Dec. 24, 1942, in Papillion. She died May 13, 1984. He married Ada Borin on Oct. 22, 1987, in Fremont.
He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7419 in Nickerson and was a former member of the Pathfinder Sam Camping Club.
Survivors include: his wife, Ada Borin Westphalen of Lincoln; a son, Tom (and wife, Terri) Westphalen of Fremont; a stepson, Stephen Borin of Lincoln; a sister, Elaine Hammond of Peoria, Ill.; six grandchildren, Chris (and wife, Tamara) Westphalen of Orlando, Fla., Rhonda Westphalen of Harvard, Amy (Mrs. Roy) Schuette of Plattsmouth, Amanda (Mrs. Troy) Dowty, Melissa Jasinski and Rene Westphalen, all of Fremont; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Katherine (Hartmann) Westphalen; his first wife, Irene; and a daughter, Patricia Novotny.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont with the Rev. Phillip Vance of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont officiating. Visitation will be 1-9 p.m. Thursday and 9-11 a.m. Friday with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, all in the funeral home. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with military graveside services conducted by the Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post 854 and American Legion Post 20.
