ALFRED "Freddy" CASTANEDA

Al Castaneda, age 72, of Fresno, CA passed away on November 28, 2014. He passed away peacefully in his sleep with his family by his side. He was born to the late Manuel and Cora Castaneda, in July 5, 1942. Al succumbed to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease after a cardiac event. Al enjoyed games of chance because of legendary good luck. he was feared by ponies and dealers alike. Al loved to fish, and hike, and a day of barbecuing with his son, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The outdoors was a simple pleasure for him. He would say to anyone who would listen, people are always asking for more "What fools these mortals be". To sum up Al's life in a word, "Astounding". Al's story of continuous accomplishments is inspirational and expansive in its effect. He attended Edison High School in 1959. A native son of Fresno formed his hard work ethics working in the fields of Fresno County. From 1963 to 1969, he worked as a farm laborer, and truck driver for Gino Devichio. Fresno of today would be a pale shadow of itself without his lifetime stewardship. His journey with the City of Fresno Began in April of 1969, through February of 1971. He was a Laborer form February of 1971 through 1976. He held the title of Community Development Aide from 1970 to 1976, attending evening classes at Fresno City College, majoring in Social Science, obtaining his Associates Of Arts Degree. With dedicated effort, and continuous education, Alfred advanced to his esteemed position in the Public Works Department as a Relocation Specialist I, and Contract Compliance Specialist, Construction Management Division. He was a Program Aide in 1973, a Relocation Specialist I in 1977, and Contract Compliance Specialist I in 1981. He obtained his real estate license in 1983. Al's lifetime effort has made Fresno the "All American City" it is today. After his continuous service to the City of Fresno for nearly four decades, his prolific commendations culminated in his final honor. On December 31, 2007, "Al Castaneda Day" was declared an official City of Fresno celebration. After 36 years of exemplary work, Al retired on January 1, 2008.

Home Al is survived by his four children, Vincent John Madrid, Molly Lynn Morin of Fresno, Lisa Marie Aquino of Reedley, and Sally Ann Ruiz of Fresno; and four siblings, Evelyn Stankewitz, Manuel Castaneda II, Bobby Castaneda, and Virginia Maytorena. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and extensive nieces and nephews. Al's grandchildren and great-grandchildren referred to him as "Ta Ta". They loved him and followed him and laughed with him passionately during visits. A Viewing will be held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 351 E. Kearney Blvd., Fresno, CA93706, on Monday, December 8, 2014, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m.
