Carey Johnson Obituary

Carey Hugh Johnson

April 14, 1942 - August 17, 2025

Fresno, California - Carey Johnson, a resident of Fresno, passed away peacefully on Aug. 17 after a long battle with Parkinson's disease. A longtime attorney in Fresno, he was 83 years old.

Carey was born on April 14, 1942, in Cleveland, Ohio, to L. Russell and Jeanette Johnson. The family moved to Burbank, California, where Carey grew up with his brother, Clark, who preceded him in death.

Carey attended Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks, California. He later attended the University of San Francisco, where he met his wife, Elaine. They were married in 1966.

Carey graduated from the University of San Francisco with a bachelor's degree in Accounting in 1964 and graduated from the university's School of Law in 1967.

After graduation, Carey served in the US Marine Corps as a lawyer and was stationed in Da Nang, Vietnam. He attained the rank of captain.

Upon returning, Carey and his family settled in Fresno in 1971. He joined the law firm Stammer, McKnight, Barnum and Bailey. A trial attorney, he later became senior partner. Carey also appeared in the Super Lawyers program from 2008 to 2014, served on the board of Fresno Community Hospital and was part of the California Medical Legal Association. He retired from law in 2018.

Carey was known for his love of adventure. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed hiking, bicycling boating and skiing. He was also a pilot and motorcyclist. Yosemite ranked among Carey's favorite places. He especially loved introducing people to the park.

He also enjoyed travel. With his wife Elaine, he visited countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America. They were often joined in their travels by family friend Father Robert Jones.

When not on the road, Carey was known for his barbecuing skills.

He was also a volunteer with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, was involved with his church and served as an advocate for foster youth at CASA of Fresno and Madera Counties.

Carey is survived by his wife Elaine; sons Craig and Chris (Heidi); grandchildren Parker (Elizabeth), Anders (Macy), Lainee, Katrina and Mariah; great grandson Sonny; and many family members and friends.
