Mary Jane "Sis" Frye Scates, 82, of 942 9th Street, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2025 at her residence.
Born in Gaffney, she was the wife of the late Leonard Scates and the daughter of the late William R. Frye, Sr. and Inez Kirby Frye. She was a graduate of Gaffney High School, enjoyed caring for stray cats and enjoyed gardening. Mrs. Scates was retired from Cherokee Memorial Hospital and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving is a daughter, Penny Scates Clormann (Michael) of the home; a brother, Charles Roland Frye (Jane) of Ringo, GA; three sisters, Vicky Hall of Palo Alto, CA, Patricia "Trish" Hardaway (Bill) of Dandridge, TN and Doris F. Pearson (Esbert) of Gaffney; a grandson, Cody Clormann (Brianna); a greatgranddaughter, Laynie Clormann; two sisterslaw, Dianne Frye and Cindy Matthews, both of Gaffney; a special niece, Angel Morrissey of Gaffney; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Scates was preceded in death by two sons, Barry Scates and Michael Scates; and three brothers, William R. "Billy" Frye Jr., James E. Frye and Dennis E. Frye.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00PM on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at Frederick Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.
