Gainesville - Kathleen Joan Ferguson, 51, of Gainesville, passed away on July 1, 2015 in Gainesville, Florida.
A memorial service will be held at First Lutheran Church, 1801 NW 5th Avenue, in Gainesville on Friday, July 17th at 2 PM.
Kathleen was born in Chicago, Illinois to Tom and Joan Hanus on October 3, 1963. She attended William Fremd High School in Palatine, IL and graduated from Howland High School in Warren, Ohio in 1981. She attended Bowling Green State University and Youngstown State University studying Journalism. Kathy then went on to earn a degree in education at Georgia State University in 1990. She taught at Manvel Public School in North Dakota for three years. Following moving to North Carolina and finally settling in Gainesville, Kathy was a stay at home mom who worked part-time as a tutor and volunteered in the Alachua County Public Schools system for several years. When her children were ready, Kathy returned to teaching as a substitute for ACPS and later as a full-time teacher at Fort Clarke Middle School. She loved reading, writing, collecting rocks and gemstones, camping, hiking, yoga, traveling, and all things spiritual. Kathy was an active member of First Lutheran Church and St. Augustine Church in Gainesville. She also was a Cenacle Companion, and was involved with several ministries worldwide including The World Community for Christian Meditation.
Kathy is survived by her husband Ron and children: John, Charles, and Justine of Gainesville; parents Joan and Tom Hanus and brother Bill Hanus of Orlando, FL; and 10 nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Haven Hospice, E.T. York Care Center, 4200 NW 90th Boulevard, Gainesville, FL 32606.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Haven Hospice for their care and support.
