Janet Elaine Bennett

DALLAS, N.C. - Janet Elaine Hawley Bennett, 59, 428 S. Rhyne St., Apt. C, died Friday, April 26, 2013.

She was the daughter of Peggy Jean Stack Hawley of Stanley and the late William Garfield Hawley Jr. She was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the First Baptist Church in Stanley.

Jan loved her children unconditionally, and those grandbabies, oh my, they were the light of her life. Jan loved the work she did. She worked for 19 years for the probation and parole department for the state of North Carolina. Jan made many friends and treated everyone she met with respect. She always believed all people deserved respect until you showed that you did not deserve hers. She loved cartoons even as old as she was, loved "King of the Hill," and would watch endless episodes of the "Andy Griffith Show." She was rarely without a cup of coffee in hand. She loved playing games at family gatherings. "The beach was my favorite place to be for relaxation." She was an early-morning riser. In her own words, she was "the best grammy in the world!"

In addition to her mother, she is survived by four children, James (J.B.) Bennett of the home, Tameka Bennett of Dallas, Nathaniel Bennett and wife, Leshay, of Lowell, and Chevon T. Bennett, of Kentucky; four siblings, Richard Hawley and wife, Linda, of Mount Holly, Camille Hawley Whitmire, of Anchorage, Alaska, Beth Hawley Skidmore and husband, Randy, of Stanley, David Hawley and wife, Deanna, of Stanley; 12 grandchildren; and her special friend, Roger Lomick.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Bennett will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 29, 2013, at the Stanley Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Dr. Danny Penny officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
