He was born in Easton, Pennsylvania on February 23, 1931. He was a graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 1957 as well as from Gallaudet College, now called Gallaudet University in 1962.

Winchell met his wife, Ruth while pursuing his art education degree at Gallaudet. They graduated together and got married on the very same day – June 4th in 1962. Winchell taught a variety of subjects, including art education, photography, woodworking and related vocational skills at those following schools over the years - Wisconsin School for the Deaf, Crotched Mountain School for the Deaf (New Hampshire) and Clarke School for the Deaf (Massachusetts). He is remembered as a wonderful and caring teacher to many.

In addition, Winchell was an exceptional silversmith, selling a wide range of handmade jewelry, and was often asked to make wedding rings. He was an avid rock hound and mineralogist. He would often be seeking minerals in the New England wilderness. And he loved to fish and would catch many fish with simply a hook and an earthworm. He was active with many organizations including associations for the deaf and mineral clubs.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by his two sons, Arthur Moore and his wife, Beth; John Moore and his wife, Marsha; his grandchildren, Brandon, Jason, Sara, Megan and Jack; his nieces/nephew, Heather, Erik and Sheri. He was predeceased by his grandson, Kevin Moore and his brother, Andrew Moore and his wife, Janice.

His family will hold a celebration of life on Friday, July 8th at 2:00 PM at the First Congregational Church, 102 Middle Street, Hadley, Massachusetts 01035.

When I met Winchell first time is at St. Mary school as part of Willie Ross school through his wife back in the 1980´s. I did have him as my art teacher for the first time at Clarke, I was elated and excited to have him as my teacher good as his wife! He taught me a lot throughout my years at Clarke! He and his wife were my good role models in my life. I´m proud to say he was my favorite art / photography teacher ! My condolences to his wife and children!

Dearest Ruth, Arthur, John & families; Our sincere condolences in the loss of your beloved husband, father & grandfather. The world has lost an amazing gentleman! His wonderful personality was loved by many & respected by all. His talent as an artist shone brightly in his gorgeous jewelry. We always enjoyed talking with him about his various interests, including fishing at his much-loved home in Maine.
He is now with his loved ones who have gone before him. We´re sure he is talking fishing with his beloved grandson, Kevin.
Our love & hugs to each of you! Remember his sweet smile & all your memories of him as you travel your grief journey.
Love, Jan & Ferna
