Joseph Bohl

May 27, 1966 - March 27, 2025

Joseph "Joe" Bohl, 58, of Mason City, Iowa, passed away after a courageous battle with brain cancer on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2025, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 120 1st St NE, Mason City, with Rev. Stephen Benitz and Barb McCaulley officiating. Burial will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd St NE, Mason City. A time for sharing will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Joe Bohl was born on May 27, 1966, to Darwin "Skip" and Sandra (Boyle) Bohl. A graduate of Mason City High School, he dedicated his career to public service, joining the city workforce in 1987. Through hard work and determination, he steadily advanced, achieving a milestone in 2014 when he earned his Public Water System Grade 4 Distribution certification from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. Most recently, he served as a Street Parks Supervisor, taking pride in his work and the community he helped maintain.

On April 6, 1991, Joe married Bernadette Ramirez, and together they built a loving family with their two daughters. As a father, he cherished family vacations, making unforgettable memories at destinations like Universal Studios, Denver, Colo., and California. No matter where they traveled, fun and laughter were always part of the journey. Summers were marked by his simple pleasures, gathering around a campfire with a cold beer on a Friday or Saturday night.

Joe had a big heart and a helping hand for anyone in need. Whether it was carpentry, plumbing, or lending support to a neighbor, he was always ready to assist. He loved his pets, golfing, fishing, and cheering on his favorite football teams. His dedication extended beyond his job; he was an active member of AFSCME, serving as both local president and steward. Known for his fairness and integrity, he led with honesty and a steady hand.

Joe's warmth, generosity, and unwavering work ethic left a lasting impact on his family, friends, and community. His legacy of kindness and service will not be forgotten.

Those left to cherish memories of Joe are his wife, Bernadette; daughters, Jackie and Sara; siblings, Chris Nielsen, JV (Teri) Bohl, Phillip (Miranda) Bohl; mother-in-law, Dee Cisneros; sister-in-law, Amanda Ramirez; dogs, Blu and Phoebe; cats, Simba and Stormy; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents; as well as many aunts and uncles.

I got to know Joe and his family while working at the library and through AFSCME as a Union member. He was always friendly, knowledgeable and willing to support us. My condolences to his family.

To Joe´s family...my name is John Muth, second cousin to Skip, Hunts & Patty. I have lived in Ft Madison, Iowa for 53 years. I have very fond memories of of the cousins listed above! Skip & Hunts were older than me, but what cards they were! I´ll always remember all laughter because of these good guys!! My grandma was Ann Steinfort, my mom was Phyllis Kantaris. Great memories of my childhood. I did not know Joe, but I know he had to be a great guy, coming from the family he came from! Just wanted to share a bit.

So sorry to your family. I worked with Joe and I just retired and know he was looking forward to it. He always had a great sense of humor. He will be missed.
