Kyle DeVries Obituary

CLEAR LAKE - Kyle A. DeVries, 20, of 1316 N. Sixth St. in Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Sept. 11, 2007) at his home surrounded by family and friends after a hard fought battle with leukemia.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at the Agape Christian Family Church, 2810 Highway 18 W., Clear Lake, with Pastor David Toyne officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and then one hour before the service on Friday at the church.

Family suggests memorials to the Kyle A. DeVries Memorial Fund to be used to set up a scholarship fund.

Kyle was born in New Hampton, the son of David and Jackie (Swehla) DeVries.

He attended school through his freshman year at New Hampton and then moved to Clear Lake where he graduated in 2005. While in high school he was active in sports playing baseball, wrestling and especially football. After he graduated from high school he attended Ellsworth Community College, Iowa Falls, where he played football and would have graduated in May 2007.

He was an avid Green Bay Packer and Hawkeye fan. Kyle enjoyed playing PlayStation with his friends, watching football with his buddies, going to movies with his fiancée, Erin, and spending time with his family.

He had a great sense of humor and was always playing practical jokes. He was always the life of the party and always more concerned about others than himself.

Kyle is survived by his father, David DeVries and his wife, Roni, of Clear Lake; his mother, Jackie Lemke and her husband, Jimmy, of New Hampton; a daughter, Mia; brother, Logan Finnegan, of New Hampton; sisters, Lola Lemke of New Hampton and Kayla Byers of Mason City; fiancée, Erin Morehouse, of Clear Lake; paternal grandmother, Cheryl DeVries, of Charles City; maternal grandmother, Pat Lukes, of New Hampton; step maternal grandfather, Bob Volker, of New Hampton; step maternal grandparents, Gary and Jeannie Lemke of Sumner; step paternal grandparents, Craig and Colette Brandau, of Mason City; great-grandmother, Charlotte Conway, of Elma; aunts, uncles, cousins and hosts of friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Larry DeVries and maternal grandfather Larry Swehla.

Jackie, Jimmy, Logan, & Lola,

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Jackie, you told us of the night Kyle accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He called you and talked for hours. There is no doubt he's in Heaven. I'm sure Nikki was at Heaven's gates cheering his homecoming as Kyle made his grand entrance to find the mansion God has prepared for him. I pray that through this, others will seek the Lord to understand where Kyle found his strength. May God bring all of you peace and comfort in the days to come, and through the difficult journey called grief.

Love in Christ!!

Jackie, Dave, and families,
I feel blessed as many of you do to have even known Kyle, as a kid he was so much fun to watch and be around, that smile that was missing four front teeth for what seemed like forever, the energy he had was unbelievable and exhausting at times, and I am glad I got to be part of that. But wow, the man he turned into was something, he was absolutley an amazing person and athlete who touched alot of people in many different ways! Very selfless and undoubtly brave. I am very sorry for your loss. Chrissy

We loved hanging out and being with kyle. He was a good friend and one of the most fun and outgoing people that we have ever met. He always had a smile on his face. We give our condolences to his parents and best wishes for them. He will be greatly missed and loved by all of us.

I met kyle at the hospital, and even during treatments he was always smiling and in a good mood. He made everyone laugh, I was shocked to see him taken away so soon. He was an awesome person and will be remembered by many people in such a positive way. He is in a better place now, watching over everyone he cares for.

Kyle A. DeVries Family,

We have been saddened over the past few weeks to hear that the transplant was unsuccessful. We met Kyle at the Surf fund raiser… what an honor to have such a wonderful son.

Jeanine and I know first hand the tough times you have had throughout this process with Jeanine having been diagnosed twice with leukemia and having two transplants herself over the years.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all! Be comforted by the great memories of a wonderful son that made memories not only for you, but those who knew him and your community that enjoyed his success in football.

He is in a better place now!
He will be remembered!
And, some day we will join him to be at his side.
