James Paul Kent, Jr.

April 19, 1939 - July 24, 2024

James Paul Kent, Jr., 85 of Lynchburg passed away peacefully in his home on July 24, 2024. He was the husband of Anne Elcan Kent.

He was born April 19, 1939 in Altavista VA, a son of the late Dr. J. Paul Kent, Sr. and Eleanor Martin Kent. He was a graduate of William & Mary College and Law School. James was a partner of Kent & Kent Law Firm. He practiced law for 60 years in the Altavista community. His dedication and passion for the legal profession was evident to his colleagues and the clients he served. James believed in serving his community through civic service. His service included serving as legal counsel for the towns of Hurt and Altavista, serving on the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors, being a founding member of Altavista on Track, serving as a past president of the Altavista Lions Club and Altavista Chamber of Commerce, 33 years on the First National Bank Board of Directors, and serving on the boards of Danville Community College, Ferrum College, Virginia Technical Institute and the Altavista Life Saving Crew. He was also a member of the Campbell Masonic Lodge #316 for over 50 years. His favorite past time when not involved in community service was working on the family farm.

In addition to his wife, James is survived by his three daughters, Eleanor Kent and her husband, Will Holliday of Farmville, Susan Mattson and her husband, Brad of Charlotte, NC, and Sarah Troiano and her husband, Jason of Cary, NC; four grandchildren, Ella Troiano, Naomi Troiano, Molly Mattson, and Andrew Mattson; his wife's daughters Elizabeth Calder and her husband, Robert of Virginia Beach and Hannah Smith and her husband, Christopher of Forest.

He was preceded in death by wife Nancy Lowry, wife Gyneth Arthur Grizzard and his business partner and brother Gordon Kent.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m., Friday, July 26, 2024 at Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista.

A private graveside service will be conducted at Green Hill Cemetery, Altavista.
