Martha Cline Obituary

Martha Ann Cline

Martha Ann (Mott) Crouch Cline, 84, of Chatham, Virginia, passed over to the hands of her Lord, on Tuesday, November 30, 2021. She was born in Stony Point, N.C. on June 8, 1937, to Frank and Janie Crouch. She grew up in Stony Point, the youngest of nine children. In seventh grade, she met Rick, who would be her future husband, and lifelong love.

Mott graduated from Pfeiffer College with a teaching degree. She taught for many years, impacting her students, not only with academics, but with her love and exuberance for life. Her final years of teaching were at Woodlawn Academy in Chatham, and the story is told, that many students wanted her to be their 4th grade teacher, so they could play softball with her during recess!

Mott loved being outdoors, playing on church softball teams, hiking with kids, and grandkids, working in the yard. Her favorite thing in later years was to be on the dock, fishing with her grandchildren. Much laughter and joy came to all of us through her passion for life.

Mott was very involved with her church, Watson Memorial United Methodist. She was always available to cook a meal, give someone a needed ride to a doctor's appointment, teach a Sunday School class, whatever was asked of her. She enjoyed a few years of singing in the church choir, as well.

Mott and Rick were married 60 years, had three children, nine grandchildren, and currently have five great-grandchildren with more on the way. She was a devoted wife to Rick, and a loving, amazing mother to her three children, Cindy Cline Reid (Richard), Anne Marie Cline Bergamini (George), and David Crouch Cline (Sarah). She was a beautiful, fun-loving, adored grandmother (GMom) to Ryan, Kasey, Robert, Matt, Jeremy, Annie, Joey, Will, and Emma, and to her great-grandchildren, Haley, Olivia, Raegan, Eli, and Desmond.

She will be missed by all who knew her, but heaven (especially Rick) is celebrating an angel coming home! Mott's family would like to thank the caregivers of Poets Walk Memory Care Community in Fredericksburg, Va. for assisting her gently through the phases of Alzheimer's. We also appreciate the Mary Washington Hospice team that assisted in watching over Mott, as well.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Watson Memorial United Methodist Church in Chatham, Va. on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 until 1:45 p.m. The graveside service will be family only, following the church service.

Dear Cindy, Anne and David,
It was with great sadness that we learned of your mother“s passing. She was a great lady. When our sons, David and Greg were told of her death they both said she was the best teacher we ever had. She taught a wonderful 4th grade class at Woodlawn and not just because of the baseball which was terrific. They just loved her as a loving great teacher. WE all send our deepest sympathy and please know that your mother will always be in our hearts. With affection Jeanne, Norman, David and Greg

Mott and Rick reflected the love of the Lord Jesus wherever they lived. Their legacy of telling others the good news and Christian hospitality continues to encourage us to keep our eyes on the Lord, no matter what (Hebrews 12:1-3). We will continue to pray with you, dear family, as you remember Mott and Rick today and in the days to come. They have heard their Savior's commendation, Well done, good and faithful servants...enter into My joy...

I taught with Mott at Woodlawn Academy in the early 80's. I had moved from Ohio and she welcomed me. She was an outstanding teacher and so kind to everyone. I still hang the shell ornament that she made for me on my Christmas tree. I think of her smile and energy on that baseball field with her students, smacking that baseball mitt and yelling encouragement to all the players. She was a true gem!
