Murel Cunningham Obituary

Murel C. Cunningham, age 83, and Bertha Gray Cunningham, age 82, both of Edwardsville, formerly of Sorento, died on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006. Mr. Cunningham died at 3:25 a.m. at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, and Mrs. Cunningham died at 7:20 p.m. at Elmwood Care Center in Maryville.

He was born on April 6, 1923, in Edwardsville, the son of the late Arthur "Dutch" and Pearl Smith Cunningham.

He married Bertha Nadine Gray on Nov. 11, 1955, in Wood River.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was employed by and retired from the City of Edwardsville water department as part of the maintenance crew. His memberships included the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1561, Disabled American Veterans, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, and AFLCIO Laborers Local 179.

She was born on March 12, 1924, in Wood River, the daughter of Edgar and Ida Mathis Gray. She graduated from Wood River High School in 1942. She attended Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey. She was employed as a dental assistant for Dr. Leever in Wood River for several years. Her memberships included the First Assembly of God Church in Edwardsville. In her earlier years, she was involved with the drum and bugle corps drill teams.

The couple are survived by a son: Jeff Cunningham and wife, Debbie of Troy; two daughters: Beth Metcalf and husband, Thomas of Wood River, and Cherie Sedlacek of Edwardsville; a daughter-in-law: Marilyn Baker of Texas; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his sister: Nellie Schlemer of Edwardsville.

They were preceded in death by her son: Randy Baker; his brother: Arthur Cunningham; his sister: Alvera Jones; and her brother: Edgar "Mac" Gray.

Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the First Assembly of God Church in Edwardsville.

Joint funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Perfetti Funeral Home in Sorento with Rev. Tim Broihier officiating.

Interment will be at Sunnyside Cemetery in Sorento.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

I will truley miss Murle and Nadine, I looked at them as my mom and dad. I remember Murle said , I'd take in a old stray dog Pam , why would'nt I take you in.. He was a beautiful man and I loved him so much. Nadine allways treated me like her own daughter, the years I lived in that old house on Kingshighway were the best of my life. A true house full of love.Jeff,Deb, Beth,Cheri, Cam, Tab..My heart is with you, I love you'all so much. I'm so sorry I was'nt able to attend the services. Pam
