John Poynor Obituary

John Dolan Poynor

Big Lake

On May 17, 2015, our beloved husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and good friend to many, went to be with our Lord and Savior.

He was born June 5, 1955, to D.D.(PeeWee) and Darlyne Miller Poynor. On March 24, 1973, he married the love of his life, Letha Durden. Together, they celebrated 42 wonderful years and had one son and two daughters whom he was extremely proud of.

Buddy was a lifelong resident of Big Lake, where he was a member of the First Baptist Church, was currently serving as County Commissioner and on the board of the Big Lake Economic and Development Corporation.

Upon graduating Reagan County High School in 1973, he attended diesel technician school in Irving, Texas. He then moved back home to work with his father in the family business, D.D. Poynor Construction. He was a hard worker and made his family proud, especially his father. After his father's retirement, he took over the business and worked alongside with his son and one son-in-law. He spent everyday with his wife; they worked together, made time for special weekend getaways and spent time with their children and grandchildren. He was a wonderful, avid pilot and motorcyle rider. He piloted 115 missions for the non-profit organization, Angel Flight, where he was known for his selfless, gracious acts of flying people from all over when they were in need. He was a one of a kind man and the type of friend to have. He never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone, in any way possible.

Buddy is rejoicing in Heaven with his two brothers, Wayne and Winn Poynor. He is also preceded in death by his Poynor grandparents and Miller grandparents.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Letha; his son, J.D. Poynor and wife Carrie of San Angelo; daughter Amy Evans and husband Kelly of Greenwood; daughter Whitney Brandon and husband Jacob of San Angelo; parents D.D. and Darlyne Poynor of Big Lake; brother Joe D. and wife Debbie, of Breckendrige; mother-in-law Shirley Hoffman and husband Cotton of Brownwood; five grandchildren, Bethany, Makenzie and Taylor Poynor and Alex and Aundrea Evans; and two great-granddaughters, Kaizley and Jaylynn. He is also survived by one special aunt, Ruth Franklin; six other sisters-in-law; five brothers-in-law; and numerous nieces, newphews and cousins.

Pallbearers include Curtis Day, Tommy Holt, Terry Jones, David Ridgeway, Jeff Weatherby, Clinton White, John Wilha and Chuck Williams.

Honorary pallbearers include Burt Bruton, Allen Durden, Darren Durden, Rowdy Hall, Deryl Henson, Heath Holt, Jerrod Holt, Larry Isom, Donald Meroney, Danny Morris and Dennis Wilha.

A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at Johnson's Funeral Home in San Angelo, Texas. A memorial service to celebrate and honor his life will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 21, 2015, at First Baptist Church, 510 E. 7th Street, Big Lake, TX, with burial services to follow in Glenn Rest Cemetery.

Our hero had a contagious laugh and smile that will be missed, but never forgotten.

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever." Psalms 23

Buddy, I truly can't thank you enough for your great friendship, your knowledge that you shared, and most of all for your generous heart in wanting to help people like myself. The world is quickly running out of people like you and y'all are few and far between to begin with.....

I enjoyed every moment we spent flying the Baron across Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and many more. I can't speak highly enough about your abilities as a pilot and your patience for a young aviator coming up to speed. It must have been hard....hard to decide if you were going to let this young man take the controls and fly in your absence, to put faith in my competence and know that I would care for your machine as you would. What you did for me and my career is simply unheard-of.

I know you will be there, riding next to me with your cup of coffee in hand and giving friendly advice, sharing your past experiences - "do this, do that, and whatever you do, DON'T DO THAT!! Your legacy lives on....and I thank you again - for all the lives you touched and the difference you made for us, as you were truly one of a kind. So godspeed Buddy, keep those props turnin' high in the western skies and we will meet again above the contrails...
