George Dixon Merritt, Jr
1944-2024
George Dixon Merritt, Jr, age 80, passed away peacefully Friday, December 27, 2024 at Grand Village in Grand Rapids, MN. George was born on March 30, 1944, to George Dixon Merritt, Sr and Lorena Isabella Austin in Portland, Maine.
George enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in 1966, and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He received an honorable discharge on January 17, 1968. George was proud to serve his country, and it was evident how much he loved his country by how he honored those who served and were serving throughout his life.
He began a family in south Florida and had 2 children, Angela in 1966 and Jason in 1968. After leaving the military and setting in south Flordia, George went to trade school and became a welder/ironworker. Some of his proudest accomplishments in this field were the EPCOT center and the Alaskan Pipeline.
On December 26, 1980, George married the love of his life, Sheryl (Sheri) J. Hursh. Their love of the Lord solidified their relationship, and they truly became one as it was present in all they did. You often heard George quote scripture and when he mentioned Sheri, he usually would share Proverbs 18:22 "He who finds a wife finds a GOOD thing and obtains favor from the Lord."
George and Sheri owned Sonshine Muffler for 32 years and Quality Air Check for numerous years. George's favorite thing to share with customers was what their name meant in the Lord's eyes. He had two name books that he would use, and one would go with him wherever he went.
His trust in the Lord lead him to chaplaincy and ministering in the Itasca County Jail for over 20 years. It was not uncommon for George to lend a helping hand, say a prayer over someone who was struggling and share scripture with them. A favorite scripture verse was John 8:12 "...I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
George will be lovingly remembered by his children Angela Merritt Young and Jason (Ann) Merritt, grandchildren Gabriel Young, Tristan Young, Seth Young, Austin (Katie) Merritt, Alysa Merritt and Andrew Merritt, great-grandchildren Jayleigh and Jason, with another great-granddaughter arriving in May, 2025. Sister-in-laws Kim Merritt Cobb and Gloria (Chuck) Lea, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
A private service will be held in the Spring.

I'm so sorry to learn of George's passing. He was a good customer of ours when we owned Corcoran Auto Supply, and I always enjoyed visiting with him over the years. I hope that cherished memories will bring his family comfort and peace in the days to come. Sending sincere sympathy ~
