XENIA — Richard Delray Newell, April 4, 1930 –February 28, 2024. Richard was born second son of Pearl and Lois (Calvert) Newell in Springfield Ohio. He graduated from Ross High School as senior class president. He joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at bases in the U.S. during the Korean War and also served in England where he shook Queen Elizabeth's hand. He married Doris Sprinkle of Jamestown, Ohio, and they had two daughters: Vicki (Paul Dunteman, Jr.) of Cincinnati and Kathie (Michael Taylor) of Beavercreek, who survive him. He is also survived by two sisters, Jo Ann of Texas, and Wanda of Miamisburg, as well as sisters-in-law Ellen Eavers of Xenia, Peggy Newell of Xenia, and Susan Newell of Springfield. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Vernon, Alvin, and Lamar, and sisters Joyce Ann and baby Maxine, along with sister-in-law Hazel Hedgepeth and brothers-in-law Roy Hedgepeth, David Perry, Bill Morneault, and Charles Vaughn, In high school, Richard played basketball and baseball, and also played those sports on church teams. He bowled with work colleagues, went square-dancing, and participated in cowboy action shooting. He built with his own hands the home that has sheltered his family and where they still reside over sixty years ago. After retiring as a truck driver, he joined the "Jamestown Liar's Club," arriving every morning for coffee and stories. He was quite artistic and enjoyed drawing. Woodworking was a hobby and he was very handy, caring for the Newell home and providing good advice to his daughters about home maintenance. He loved to read, especially western novels, and was adept at find-a-word puzzles. He enjoyed watching and feeding the birds and joining the monthly family dinners. Richard had a good sense of humor and will be missed at the dinner table and family gatherings. Services were provided by Powers Funeral Home in Jamestown, Ohio, on Wednesday, March 6. With visitation at 10 AM, and services following at 11. Interment was at Silvercreek Cemetery II immediately following.
