Brett Shapiro Obituary

Shapiro, Brett Simon

June 5, 1974 - February 22, 2024

Brett Simon Shapiro of Nashville, Tennessee was a lover of life, sports and especially his children. He was born on June 5th, 1974 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He moved with his family to Greensboro, North Carolina in 1976. Through his childhood he spent his summers at Camp Saginaw in Oxford, Pennsylvania which were the best times of his life. He attended Greensboro Day School and graduated in 1993. He was an exceptional student and great athlete, excelling in many sports. After graduating from GDS, he spent two years at Union College in Schenectady, New York, where he played Tennis. In 1997 he graduated with honors and a degree in Psychology from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill.

After graduating from UNC, Brett followed his passion for Psychology and he went on to obtain both his Masters Degree from Loyola University of New Orleans in 1998 and his PhD in Child Psychology from Florida State University in 2001.

He did his post-graduate fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. That experience inspired Brett to open his own private practice in Nashville, Tennessee in 2007. Dr. Brett made such a positive impact on so many of his patients lives. Many of whom are deeply saddened by his passing.

Brett is survived by his parents, Dr and Mrs Donna and Mark Shapiro of Greensboro, North Carolina, his brother and sister-in-law, Randall Shapiro and Larkin Peoples of Wilmington, North Carolina, the mother of his children, Lauren Geller, of Boca Raton, Florida and his beloved twins, Isabelle and Hayden Shapiro, of Boca Raton, Florida. Brett was a loving and devoted father whose children brought him the most joy. He will live on through them and his family and friends.

Brett fought a long and hard twelve year battle against the very rare cancer called myxoid liposarcoma. Brett had a warrior's spirit and fought this disease with such strength, bravery, and courage. He passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 22nd, surrounded by his family and his nurses Katy and Melody, who are truly Angels on Earth.

Brett was a unique individual who affected the lives of so many of his family, friends and patients. He will be missed and he will never be forgotten.

A memorial will be held at Temple Emanuel, 1129 Jefferson Road, Greensboro, North Carolina on Sunday, February 25th, 2024 at 2:30 p.m.

This breaks my heart. Dr. Brett played a major role in my early teenage life as he was my psychologist. He went above and beyond during my time of need and mental unrest and I'll never forget him. This was in 2008. Sending love to the whole family on the loss of a very special man.
