David Shoulberg Obituary

Shoulberg, David Robinson

March 11, 1941 - February 11, 2024

David Robinson Shoulberg, of Greensboro, NC died February 11, 2024, at his home, with his loving wife Sylvia at his side. Born in Aurora, Illinois March 11, 1941, he was the son of John Robinson Shoulberg and Cherie Elaine (Phillips) Shoulberg.

Dave's childhood began in Akron, Iowa, followed by his formative years in Lake Bluff, Illinois. He graduated from Lake Forest High School (IL) and St. Olaf College, in Northfield Minnesota. Upon his college graduation in 1963 Dave served in John F. Kennedy's newly formed Peace Corps in Columbia. His dedication to service to others continued throughout his life. He was proudest of the relationship that was built through the Big Brothers - Big Sisters program after returning home to Chicago (now fluid in the Spanish language) when he was introduced to a young boy, Luis. Dave and Luis Pedraza (founder of the Axis1 golf putter) have remained close friends to this day. Other significant service efforts that Dave was involved in included the Lunch Buddy Program, tutoring Hispanic youth, and volunteering at various nursing homes.

Dave was a long-time resident of Greensboro, NC. He had a strong Christian faith and was a member of Grace Methodist Church, sang in the church choir, and served for a time as a Stephen Minister. He enjoyed working with people throughout his career in the insurance industry. He loved animals. He and Sylvia rescued many cats and dogs and made them their beloved pets. He was a sports fanatic and huge fan of Duke Basketball and Carolina Hurricanes Hockey. He enjoyed golf and card playing, and was an avid tennis player, where he met the love of his life, Sylvia Wilkinson Graham, whom he married on June 27, 1987.

Dave was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his daughter, Amy Foss, grandchildren Corey and Emma Foss, and step-grandson Hunter of Ayden NC; his wife, Sylvia of Greensboro, NC, her son Brian (Bobbie) Graham, and step-grandchildren, Rachel, Mikal, Jamie, and George of Lexington, NC; Sisters Kristin (Ernie) Brown of Osprey FL, Beth (Scott) Johnson of Medina OH, and Ruth (Danny) Dums of Hayward, WI, as well as many loving nieces and nephews and a special friend Tammy.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at 2 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 438 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27401, with Fellowship following the service.

Sylvia, So sorry to hear of David's passing. David and I worked together many years in the insurance industry. His knowledge and his business friendship taught me many things. When he retired, I was happy for him but was sad that I would not see him as often. Prayers for you and your family.
