REIDSVILLE Marian Lambeth Safriet, 93, died Mar. 15, 2017 at the Deerfield Retirement Home in Asheville. Marian was born in Fayetteville, NC and grew up in Florida. She was a daughter of the late Nell and Alva S. Lambeth. She graduated from FSU in 1945 with a degree in accounting and taught there for a year. She attended graduate school at UNC-CH, and she taught at Queens College and Kings College in Charlotte. In 1951 she married Hubert Safriet and they lived in Kannapolis until 1961 when Hubert took a position with the Bank of Reidsville, which later merged with Wachovia. Marian began working at Annie Penn Memorial Hospital as an internal auditor and later became CFO. Upon retirement, she assumed the volunteer position of coordinator of volunteers. From 1981 to 1982 she served as the first woman president of the NC Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Assoc. and was made an honorary life member. She was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, served several terms on the vestry as treasurer, and served as senior warden. She held various offices in the local Episcopal Church Women (ECW), including president. She was a long-time member of the St. Thomas Finance Committee, and served more than once as chairperson. Marian was on the board and served as treasurer of the Reidsville YMCA and the Reidsville United Way. She was on the board of the Diocesan ECW for a number of years and was treasurer for 3 years, served on the board of the Penick Home for 15 years, and was treasurer for several years. She was a delegate to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church in 1991 and was named to be on the search committee for the new Bishop. She was honored to be the "angel," or contact person, for Rev. Michael Curry, who became the Bishop of the Diocese in 2000. She lived at Deerfield retirement home in Asheville near her son 2008-2017 and was a member of St. Giles Church. Surviving are: her sister, Em Goodwin; her son, Philip Safriet, and his wife, Vicki, Vicki's son, Greg Gilsdorf, and Greg's son, Luke, of Hendersonville; daughter, Nancy Safriet, and her husband, John W. Schempf, of Petaluma, CA; step-daughter, Barbara Carpenter of WDC, and her children, Heather Carpenter of India and Nicole Elton, Nicole's husband, Dr. James Elton of Roanoke, VA, and their sons, Zach and Jake. A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Reidsville in several months. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium.
