Charles Henry Sowell, 60, a longtime Greenville reporter and editor, died Oct. 4, 2015.

He was born Feb. 15, 1955, the son of the late Rufus Eugene Sowell and the late Mary Charles Sowell.

Charles was an award-winning reporter and editor for The Greenville News and a former writer for the Greenville Journal. He was known for his writing and reporting about outdoor activities, sports and environmental issues.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Rudisill; sons, Wil (Erin) and Richard (Amy); and a granddaughter, Olivia; a stepmother, Betty Sowell; brother, Joey (Marsha); sisters, Missy (Paul) Sowell and Elizabeth Sowell; a loving aunt, Margaret Ann Noel, a loving, devoted friend, Ann Loftis, and many friends from his outdoor activities and many pursuits.

In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to the Greenville Humane Society or the charity of choice. A private memorial service will be set at a later date

I can see from the entries that I am not alone -- Charlie touched a lot of people. I came to know him through an article he wrote and we stayed in touch after. I enjoyed his love of nature, curiosity about the world and his kind and gentle writing style. Wishing his family comfort during this transition period.

I new Charlie when he was growing up but have not seen him in years. Did keep up with he &Laura on facebook. I will miss him he was a great outdoors man. My heart goes out to the family. Know his Aunt Margret well and she loved him very much.
