Peter Soutter Obituary

Peter Munro Soutter, died Friday, March 22nd at his residence in Hilton Head Island, after a long illness.

He was born Sept. 22, 1915, at Greenwich, Conn., the son of James Taylor and Helen Batelle Soutter. He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, Mass. and attended Harvard University. During World War II, he served for five years including the Fifth Armored Division in the European Theater. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal, and was honorable discharged as a Captain, Armor.

Mr. Soutter spent most of his business career in advertising and marketing, with such firms as J. Walter Thompson, General Foods, and Lever Brothers in New York. He came to South Carolina in 1958 with Henderson Advertising of Greenville. Later, he was associated with Advertising Inc., also of Greenville.

Mr. Soutter married Charlotte Twachtman in Dec. 1941. She died in Sept. 1980. He came to Hilton Head in early 1981 and in November of that year, married Mrs. Helen M. Ettenger.

Following retirement, Mr. Soutter volunteered for seven years at the Hilton Head Hospital. He also did voluntary work for Providence Presbyterian Church of which he was a founding member.

Surviving include his wife; three sons, Peter M. Soutter Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., David Q. Soutter of Charleston, and Michael B. Soutter of West Palm Beach, Fla. Also surviving are five stepchildren, Lee Ettenger of Torrance, Calif., Allen Ettenger of Huntingdon, Pa., Richard Ettenger of Alpharetta, Ga., Nancy Moseley of Roebuck, S.C., and Susan McGaha of Douglasville, Ga., as well as 18 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Apr. 3, at Providence Presbyterian Church, Hilton Head Island.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, 20 Palmetto Parkway, Suite 104, or Providence Presbyterian Church, 171 Cordillo Parkway, Hilton Head Island,SC 29928. - The Island Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
