Benito Menegon Obituary

Benito Menegon
Benito Arnaldo Menegon, 95, passed away on Aug. 22, in Branford, CT, exactly one year after the death of his beloved wife Lea, his childhood sweetheart.
Benito was born on October 17, 1928, in the small town of Tramonti di Sopra, Italy. He came from humble beginnings and went on to live the American Dream. At age 19 he left Lea and post-war Italy to join his father in Greenwich to work as a mason. Deeply patriotic, he proudly served in the U.S. Army. He eventually became owner and President of his own construction company, B. Menegon Builders Inc., and went on to build more than 100 homes and additions in and around Greenwich. But early on Ben knew his life wasn't complete without Lea. They married and raised three children, Lucio, Lynn and Lisa. Without a formal education and through hard work alone, he proudly sent them all to college.
Ben sometimes told the story of how he left Italy by boat with nothing but a change of clothes and a piece of cheese in his suitcase. Here in the U.S., he became a respected master craftsman, a devoted member of the First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich and proud member of the Lions Club. And after a hard day's work he liked nothing better than enjoying a good glass of red wine and a slice of Italian cheese. He loved life, was incredibly proud of his Italian heritage, and felt so very blessed to be an American.
Ben is survived by his three children, his grandsons Spencer and Samuel Lovejoy, and nephews and nieces in Italy.
A memorial will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. at First Congregational Church in Old Greenwich https://www.youtube.com/live/V9tgkRTx3FA . Donations in Ben's memory in lieu of flowers can be made to the Lions Club of Greenwich, PO Box 130, Greenwich CT 06870.

Benito (Ben) Menegon had a significant influence on me and to this day I think of him with great admiration. I worked as a helper for Ben building houses for two summers in the early 70's. He pushed me hard, but always with the intention of raising my work ethic and with it, the ability to excel at whatever job it was. Nothing he taught me was wasted, especially when I got married and had my own home. I could handle most projects without a hitch, like building a sand box for my son with corner seats and sanded surfaces. Ben was also a character who told great stories even on himself. Being an immigrant who worked hard, paid his taxes and contributed to local life in O.G., I developed a respect for those from away and hold that dear even in fractured today. Ben was a great boss, a wonderful human being and a continuing inspiration! I hope there is a fresh peach pit available!
