Elizabeth Mathews Obituary

Elizabeth Baker Mathews
Elizabeth Baker Mathews, known as Betsy to her friends, passed away shortly before her 92nd birthday on August 31, 2018 in Vero Beach, Florida. Her husband, Hayden, passed away in 2012.
The daughter of Elizabeth Swift Holladay and Charles William Baker Jr., she was born and raised in Wilmington, Delaware along with her sister Anne Louise Baker Carroll and her brother Charles William Baker III.
Betsy graduated from the Tower Hill School in Wilmington, Delaware and the Westover School in Middlebury, Connecticut.
Betsy and Hayden were longtime residents of Greenwich, Connecticut. She was a member of the Field Club of Greenwich, the Colony Club in New York, the Moorings Club in Vero Beach and the National Society of Colonial Dames. She is survived by her three children, Alexander Stirling Mathews (Katie), Adam Averell Mathews (Cherie) and Elizabeth Mathews Prezioso (Giovanni). She was very proud of and found constant delight in her grandchildren, Emily and her husband Brian, Julia, Alexander, Ashley and her husband Eli, Adam and great granddaughter Scarlet.
She loved playing bridge, knitting, needlepoint, archery, reading, music, dancing and her Yankees. She possessed undeterred optimism and determination and was fiercely loyal to her family and friends. What a life she lived, no matter how you measure it, sunsets over the water, phone calls with old friends, tomato sandwiches, cones of chocolatey ice cream, letters signed with lots of love, mystery novels and biographies, laughter with children and grandchildren, even text messages.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 22 at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of the Little Flower 5607 Massachusetts Avenue, Bethesda, Maryland 20816.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in the name of Elizabeth B. Mathews to the Indian River Medical Center Foundation, Attention Liz Bruner; 1000 37th Place; Suite 101; Vero Beach, Florida 32960; in recognition of exceptional medical care.

I met Betsy at the Village Ewe needlepoint store. She was a warm and delightful person, and my husband and I also had the pleasure of meeting Hayden several times. Betsy and I kept in touch via birthday and Christmas cards, and I always looked forward to hearing her news. I will really miss catching up! My sincere condolences on your loss.

Alex, Adam and Betsy,
I was so sorry to read of your mom's passing last week.
A more lovely woman - generous and kind whom I will never forget.
Such happy experiences of all of the Matthews each time I pass by GCDS. May she rest in eternal piece.

Dear Alex, Adam and Elizabeth,

A shinning star has lit the heavens.

September 10, 2018

Dear Alex, Adam and Elizabeth,
When I got married in 1980, your mother threw me a memorable bridal shower that will be etched in my memory forever. In her Greenwich home, we had a true ladies luncheon. It was an old fashioned event with beautiful women and generous, beautifully wrapped presents. Now, I can hear your mother's authentic welcome every time I saw her at GFC. She made me feel fabulous every time I saw her. I will always admire the love she had for your wonderful father. I have you all in my prayers as you lay her to rest and I will feel comforted by the notion that she is reunited with him and other loved ones. May God Bless you and Keep you and may His face shine upon you. Love, Meg Drake
