George Egbert Obituary

GEORGE PENNINGTON EGBERT, JR. - of Greenwich, Connecticut died on Sunday, January 15, 2006 at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.

Born on January 14, 1930 in Manhattan, he was the only child of George P. Egbert and Mary Eloise Cook Egbert of Upper Montclair and Bay Head, New Jersey. Mr. Egbert graduated from Montclair Academy in June of 1947 and was the class of 1951 at Yale University. Mr. Egbert served in the Counter Intelligence Corps of the United States Army during the Korean War. Mr. Egbert joined the Bond Department of the Prudential Insurance Company at their headquarters in Newark, New Jersey in 1953 and remained at the Prudential for 11 years working as a Managing Director in equity research as an analyst in food, oil and electronics.

Mr. Egbert joined The First National City Bank, now known as Citibank, N.A., as an Assistant Vice President and Assistant Head of Research in 1964. In 1968 he was made a Senior Vice President and Head of Investment Research. In 1975 he left investment research to manage endowments and foundations in Citibank's investment division. When Citibank sold their investment division to USF&G, the Baltimore insurance company, in 1988, Mr. Egbert was made a Managing Director of Chancellor Capital Management, Inc. in New York City. One year later Chancellor was sold to HRH the Prince of Liechtenstein, who later sold to Invesco, Inc. of New York City in 1998, from which Mr. Egbert retired as a Managing Director in 1999.

Mr. Egbert was a past president of the Yale Club of Montclair, New Jersey, a former trustee of Montclair Kimberley Academy and a former president of its Alumni Association. He was also a former member of the New York Society of Security Analysts and The Bay Head Yacht Club and a former director of the Shippan Point Association in Stamford, Connecticut. At the time of his death, he was a trustee emeritus of the Bay Head Chapel in Bay Head, New Jersey and a member of the Stamford Yacht Club, The Yale Club of New York City, The Society of the Colonial Wars in the State of New York and the New England Society.

Mr. Egbert is the grandson of the late Dr. James C. Egbert, who founded the Columbia Business School in 1916 and was its first dean as well as a past president of the Long Island College hospital. Mr. Egbert is a descendent of several of New York's oldest families, including Benjamin Huntting and James H. Aldrich, early settlers of Sag Harbor and East Hampton, New York.

Mr. Egbert is survived by his beloved wife of 34 years, Judith Barrett Egbert of Greenwich, Connecticut and their two children, Melissa Egbert Sheehan and George Pennington Egbert III, both of Manhattan. Mr. Egbert is also survived by three children, Ann Egbert of Point Pleasant, New Jersey, Susan Egbert Gilroy of Manhattan and James C. Egbert of Montclair, New Jersey, and four grandchildren from the marriage to his first wife, the late Ann Hedges Egbert of Upper Montclair, New Jersey, who died in 1970.

A funeral service will be held at Christ Church in Greenwich, Connecticut on Friday, January 20, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, c/o Lucien J. Cote, M.D., 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, New York 10018.

A wonderful, gentle man has passed on....God rest his soul. I remember great conversations at Stamford Yacht Club, and his wit and wisdom. He will be sorely missed. My condoloences to Missy, Penn, and Mrs. Egbert.
