Joe NEYER Obituary

News Death Notice

NEYER, Joe 49, passed away Thursday evening in his Oxford, Ohio home, surrounded by his wife Laurie and his sons Alex, Aaron and Zeke, and their dog, Rosalita. Joe was a man of endless curiosity and uncommon values. He lived his life in a perpetual state of attentiveness, and one could see this path in the houses he built, the friendships he forged, and the words he wrote. Joe was diagnosed with glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive brain tumor, in November of 2012. After his surgery, he tried chemotherapy and radiation, and then he said no more. Joe determined that the best way to die gracefully was to live intentionally. Over the past two years, he turned his diagnosis into a conversation that benefited countless people - a conversation always more focused on others and on living well, than his own terminal state. Joe is the beloved son of Donald and Phyllis Neyer, the younger brother of Barry, Diane, Donna, Dave, Dan, Jenny, and Mary, and Uncle and friend to many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his first wife, the late Rebecca Remke Neyer, Joe leaves a legacy of love in his wake. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at the Oxford Community Arts Center, Oxford, Ohio on Sunday April 26, 2015 at 6pm. So very sorry to learn of Joe's passing. I was Phyllis' hairdresser & felt privileged to listen to all her wonderful reflections of time spent in FL & at the lake house. I know each of her children held a special place in her heart. Continued prayers for the Neyer Family.

I never knew Joe personally, but I read a lot about him and listened to all the interviews with him that I could find. I was hoping to travel to Ohio this summer to meet him in person. Joe's view on living and on dying has forever changed me. Although he was a stranger to me, he will always be an inspiration. I am very grateful for that.

Laurie and boys, so sorry to hear of Joe's death. He was so brave and we admired his sharing of his experiences with this terrible disease. You know, Laurie, that all your friends in Aquatoners share in your grief. We admire your bravery also. Wish we could have attended the services but my brother and sister-in-law were here for dinner.

Dear Don, Phyllis & Family: My sincere sympathy regarding the loss of Joe. I remember when Phyllis told me of Rebecca's passing, how he rallied thru that & around his sons. I was so happy when he met & married Laurie. I know Joe, being a Neyer, was a wonderful, caring person. I'm so sincerely sorry for your loss. I will surely lift up the Neyer family in my prayers. May God grant you peace & sweet memories @ this most difficult time. Fondly, Mary Jo Neville (Phyllis' former hairdresser @ Dillards )

Mrs and Mrs Neyer and family,
Joe was the first boy to give me candy for valentines day in the sixth grade at All Saints and as our paths crossed in the neighborhood and at Miami he was always kind and friendly and funny. I was sad to hear of his diagnosis but not surprised by the way he chose to live his life I am sure that his sons are a testament to the good man he was. I am so sorry for the loss of Joe.

Joe was filled with life and love. His delight in the simple beauties of nature and his cheerfulness in the midst of pain and disease left a legacy of joy and light in the midst of darkness. His greatness resideded in his humbleness. I am honored to be his sister-in-law
