Aaron Yocum Obituary

Aaron Gary Yocum was born in Hanford, CA on January 20, 1974. He passed away on November 1, 2010 at the age of 36. He was a loving father, brother and son, as well as a loyal friend to many. Aaron had a positive effect on everyone he knew. His sense of humor was infectious and his story-telling was legendary.

Aaron was raised in Hanford on his family's farm in Guernsey. He attended Lakeside Elementary School and graduated from Hanford High in 1992, where he was a standout three-year varsity football player, playing for the league all-star team his senior year. He went on to play football for two years for the College of Sequoia Giants as well. After playing football, he started working at Valley Ford, where he was a service writer for almost fifteen years for the Ryan family.

Aaron enjoyed playing golf and cards with his friends. He also liked watching Notre Dame, San Francisco Giants and 49ers play on TV or better yet, catch a live game when possible. His true love was spending time with his daughter Camryn. As she put it, they were "partners in crime."

Aaron is survived by his daughter, Camryn Yocum, of Hanford; his parents, Mike Yocum of Hanford and Colleen O'Neil of Lemoore; his brother and sister in law, Micky and Hannah Yocum of Hanford; his grandmothers, Wynema Yocum of Hanford and Collette O'Neil of Fresno as well as many aunts, uncles and cousins from the Central Valley and Monterey area. Aaron was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Kyle Yocum of Hanford and James O'Neil of Fresno.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to your charity of choice or contributions can be made to a college fund (account # 11726063-S6) for Aaron's daughter at Educational Employees Credit Union.

Services will be held at Hanford Church of Christ on 12th and Grangeville at 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2010.

Condolences may be offered at www.peoplesfuneralchapel.com.

Arrangements entrusted to People's Funeral Chapel, 501 N. Douty St., Hanford, CA 93230 (559) 584-5591.

Dear Yocum Family,

I was so saddened to hear of Aaron's passing. Unfortunately I moved away several years ago and haven't seen Aaron since our highschool graduation. I met Aaron at church camp before our 7th grade year. He was always so much fun to be around. We kept in touch over the next couple of years via telephone (way before texting and cellphones). I remember seeing him our first day of our freshman year with that big smile and easing my anxiety of beginning those awkward teenage years. I cannot think of anyone who was not friends with Aaron. He was a true friend and valued other people's feelings. We will be praying for your family.

"I graduated with Aaron and easily recall numerous social gatherings where there might be 20 to 50 people and yet Aaron's personality and contageous laughter would overpower every person in that room. slowly but surely, we would all gravitate torwards him knowing we would be entertained by one of his many stories. He broke all social clicks because Aaron was friends with everyone even though that attribute wasn't common for the highschool student mentality. I know I speak for many when I say that on those thanksgiving holidays when everyone would travel into 'H-Town' we would be anxious to reunite with our classmates. When we would hop from one spot to the other, we knew that if Aaron was there with his 'crew' we could settle in for a night of laughter and memories. Aaron was bigger than life and had a heart to match and for that he will be profoundly missed. I'm so saddened that his family and friends have lost such a unique soul. So now we must wait longer for his famous stories, crazy stunts and uplifting laugh until we meet again. Until then, the night sky will be a lot brighter because we all know that his star will out shine them all...Sincerely, Elli Koutsoubos Rivera

I met Aaron at Lakeside Elementary in the 3rd grade, I have to say he was my first crush as he had such a infectious personality! He will be loved and missed by all who were fortunate to have known him. My prayers go out to the family, we will meet again one day friend.

I attended Lakeside Elementary with Aaron. Our small class of 40 kids allowed all of us to get to know each other well, and I remember Aaron as a quietly strong leader who was very well liked by everyone. I’m not sure where Aaron heard the quote in the first place, but in 8th grade I remember overhearing him pass on the words, “If you’re not having fun, it’s your own fault.” Such wise words for such a young person! Over the years, this quote has helped me take responsibility for my own life many times. I’m sure Aaron touched many people in this subtle way without even knowing it. I'm upset that his life has ended so early, and I am grateful to have known him.

Dear Yokum Family,
Armondo and I were deeply saddened to hear of Aaron being ill, and even more so to hear of his passing. When we were sharing stories(mostly about football) we both had to agree that there wasn't one negative thing that could be said about him. He was truly one of a kind, a gentle giant, and a true blue friend. Please accept our deepest condolences and know that we share your loss. Aaron will be sorely missed but remembered fondly in our hearts.
Much Love and Deepest Regards,
Melissa and Armondo Love

Aaron and my husband, Johnny Nickell, grew up in Guernsey/Lakeside and Johnny has fun memories with him. We all had good times with Yocum growing up. A recent fun memory last year was Aaron and Kam and Aaron Bairstow and his daughter Katie were going to the Daddy-Daughter date night at the Civic. The event was a western theme and Yocum was so proud to take his little girl. He had put on his Grandfather's western outfit complete with bolo tie, belt buckle and rings. We laughed because he could not get into his Grandfather's boots, so he borrowed a pair of Gary Ryan's boots ... which he got them on but wasn't sure if he could get them off! He was so proud as Juanita and I took pictures for their big date night! We'll miss his grand smile and joyful spirit! Aaron, you will be missed but never forgotten!

I graduated with Aaron in 92. Although we were never really good friends he was always a great guy. He would make us laugh in class and he always had a smile on his face. I remember him with Tyson, Andre, Frietas, and the rest of the "jocks" walking the halls or doing something obnoxious lol. I will always remember that. My condolences to his family and especially to his daughter. I lost my dad last year. No one should have to grow up without there Daddy.. :( Much love and light being sent to you all...

My prayers are with you, Yocum Family. I met Aaron in 1984 when I was transferred to Lakeside Elementary. He was very kind and sweet, loved his smile. I hadnt seen him in years until a few months ago. I am a manager at a retail clothing store in the Hanford Mall and as he walked in, I customer serviced him. As I kept looking at him, I asked what is your name and he replied. I said OMG, do you remember me. He didnt but once I mentioned my name to him and where, he remembered; cited memories from our childhood. I met his daughter that day. Im unsure what happened but he will be greatly missed. God has him now...Rest in Peace my friend...

I met Aaron in 5th grade. I remember he was the biggest kid in our class and he came up to me in the lunch room with Danny Garcia and he told me I was in his seat. I smirked at him and said I don't see your name on it.... I don't remember how I ended up fighting Danny, (much love now Danny) but I earned respect and we were friends since. Rest in Peace Aaron

My heart goes out to Aaron's daughter and family. I haven't seen Aaron since high school, but he was a great guy. He was taken way too soon but is now in a better place. His daughter now has a "guardian angel" for life. Aaron...you will be missed by many.

I met Aaron in kindergarten and he became one of my best friends throughout elementary school and beyond. He is truly one of the kindest people I have ever known and he always knew how to make me smile. He changed and shaped my life for the better. In 4th grade we traded gifts which we promised we would trade again at high school graduation. True to his word, Aaron walked up to me those eight years later and had his gift even though I had forgotten mine at home. With tears rolling down our faces he said, “No problem, we’ll trade at our 20 year reunion.” Over the years, as I saw him at Valley Ford and around Hanford, we would ask each other, “Do you still have it?” The answer was always yes. Although we did not make it to that date, I will cherish that childhood gift as symbol of our friendship and his kindness for the rest of my life. It was an honor to have known him and his amazing family.

To Camryn and the rest of the Yocum Family: Although no words can really help to ease the loss you bear, just know that you are very close in every thought and prayer. May the love of those around help you during your time of sorrow, and may peace which comes from the memories of love shared give you strength and comfort now and in the days ahead. Peace, prayers and blessings to you all.
