Amelia Higgins Obituary

Amelia "Amy" V (Benusis) Higgins, 94 of Avon and Black Point, beloved wife of the late John J. Higgins, Sr., died peacefully on December 16, 2015 while comforted by three generations of her adoring family. Amy was born in New Britain Connecticut to John and Anna (Bielskis) Benusis on September 16, 1921 as the fourth of five children and was a proud graduate of New Britain High School. She married her high school sweetheart John J "Red" Higgins in 1941 prior to his overseas deployment. As part of the war time workforce, she dedicated herself to a better future. The depression and war years helped shape her strong character exemplified by practicality, frugality and common sense. After the war Amy pursued interests ranging from gardening to ballroom dancing and 60 summers at her beach cottage but there was nothing of greater importance than her family. Together, Amy and Red, with equal parts wisdom, love and generosity, were a great influence on all who were fortunate enough to know them. She leaves a legacy of love and caring and is survived by her son John J. Higgins, Jr. (Tammy) of Avon, daughters Joan H. Lavieri (Peter) of Avon and Amie H. Pinette of Melbourne, FL; grandchildren Stephen Budney, Alicia Budney, Catherine Pinette, Tara Higgins, and John Higgins, III; and great grandchildren Norah Grace Amelia Buzzeo and Anna Catherine Buzzeo. Besides her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by brother John Benusis and sisters Eva Dyckman, Helen Dudzinski, Anna Baclaski and her very special niece, Helen Marquis. A heartfelt appreciation to her caregivers, Marilyn, Pat and Phyllis. Her family will receive friends Sunday, December 20, 2015 from 3 -5 PM at the Carmon Funeral Home & Family Center, 301 Country Club Road, Avon. Family and friends will gather at Carmon's at 9 AM Monday, December 21 followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at the Church of Saint Ann, 289 Arch Road, Avon followed by burial in St. Ann Cemetery. In honor of our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother please commit a random act of kindness in her memory. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gifts of Love, PO Box 463, Avon, CT 06001. For directions or condolences visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com
