CALDWELL, David M., Jr., M.D. David M. Caldwell, Jr., M.D., 78, of Manchester, beloved husband of Patricia E. Caldwell, passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side on Sunday, (October 24, 2004). He was born August 27, 1926 in Manchester, the beloved son of the late Dr. David M. Caldwell, Sr. and Henrietta B. Caldwell. He was a lifelong resident of Manchester. David was a graduate of The Loomis School and Amherst College. During World War II he attended Yale University as a V 12 and Midshipman's School at Columbia University. David served as Ensign in the U.S. Navy for three years. After World War II, he received his B.A. Degree from Amherst College and afterwards earned his Medical Degree at McGill University. Dr. Caldwell completed his internship at Bellevue Hospital in New York City and returned to Manchester to join his father in private practice as a general surgeon. He practiced medicine for 34 years in Manchester including two years as Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Manchester Memorial Hospital. Dr. Caldwell served as Past President of the Manchester Branch of the American Cancer Society, as Trustee at Manchester Memorial Hospital, and as a member of the American Medical Association and the Hartford County Medical Association. Beside his loving wife Patricia, he is survived by his four children, David M. Caldwell, III of Manchester; Candice Caldwell of New York City, NY; Deborah S. Jones and her husband Gerard of Waterford, VT, and Peter C. Caldwell and his wife Erica of Norwalk. He was a loving grandfather to Jessie and Anne Caldwell, William and David Jones, and loving uncle of several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Donald B. Caldwell of Bolton and his sister, Elspeth Badertscher of Peterborough, NH. Friends may call Thursday, October 28, from 4-7 p.m., at the Watkins Funeral Home, 142 east Center St., Manchester. Funeral services and burial will be private in the East Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the John A. DeQuattro Community Cancer Center, 73A Haynes St., Manchester, CT 06040.
