Herbert Kaplan Obituary

Herbert Kaplan, 89, of Bloomfield, passed away peacefully at home on September 8, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 24, 1933, to Eli and Ida (Levine) Kaplan but was raised by his aunt and uncle, Gertrude (Levine) and Joseph Goldberg after the passing of his parents in his early life. Herb was proud of his Brooklyn upbringing and Jewish heritage. After graduating high school, he served as a Military Police in the Army during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged. Herb was married to his true love, Barbara for over 66 years. Together they moved to Connecticut and raised their three children in Windsor before moving to Bloomfield. After working for many years in the automotive industry, he opened his own auto parts store and brought his two brothers into the business with him, ultimately growing it to 5 stores. He was a longtime congregant at Beth Hillel Synagogue serving on various committees, and a dedicated volunteer with the Jewish War Veterans. Spending time with family was the most precious part of Herb's life. Family vacations with his children and grandchildren and traveling the world with his wife brought Herb the greatest joy. He cherished his grandchildren more than anything, never missing their sporting events, recitals or school performances. Herb leaves behind his beloved wife Barbara (Katz) Kaplan; his children Kenneth Kaplan, Audrey Kaplan, Judy LaRocco and his son-in-law Stephen LaRocco; his adored grandchildren, Hannah Aitken and her husband Joshua, Jordan LaRocco and his wife Alexandra, Jenna LaRocco and Leighanne Kaplan. He also leaves to mourn Katrina Lewonczyk; his sisters-in-law Eta Kaplan and Esther Kaplan; his brother Harold Mazurek and his wife Joan; and countless other family members and friends. He was predeceased by his brothers Seymour Kaplan and Bernie Kaplan. The funeral will be graveside, with Rabbi Debra Cantor officiating, at the Beth Hillel Memorial Park Cemetery, on Monday, September 12 at 11:00 a.m., 15 Wolcott Road, East Granby. Shiva will be observed Monday through Thursday, 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m at the Kaplan home in Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, donations in Herb's memory may be made to the Jewish War Veterans Post 45, P.O. Box 150, Bloomfield, CT 06002. The family gratefully acknowledges and deeply thanks Neo and Donna for their compassionate and diligent care during these last few months as well as the dedicated nurses with HHC at Home Hospice Care. May his memory be a source of strength and a blessing. Funeral arrangements provided by Hebrew Funeral Association.
