Jane Macaione Obituary

Jane (Gioia) Macaione, 89, of West Hartford, died peacefully at her home on Christmas Eve morning, December 24, 2023. She was the widow of John J. Macaione, Jr., and the daughter of the late Carl and Katherine (Koczur) Gioia.

A 1951 graduate of Torrington High School, she went on to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a nurse, training at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and graduating from St. Francis School of Nursing in Hartford, CT. Jane spent her professional career as an operating nurse and supervisor at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT, from 1954 until her retirement in1991.

She leaves behind her three daughters, "Jane's Girls", who she deeply loved and devoted her life to: Nancy and her husband, Matthew Annitto of Glastonbury, Susan Schaffman of West Hartford, and Karen Macaione and her husband Christopher Roy of West Hartford.

She is survived by her grandchildren, her beloved little loves Taylor and Elizabeth Annitto, Laurel and Michael Schaffman and Aidan and Isabella Roy. They were truly her greatest joy, and she was their biggest fan.

Jane leaves behind her sister, Barbara Raleigh and niece Carla Ferrarotti of Torrington and many loving cousins.

In everything she did, she led with her faith. Family, friends, and the community were her life and she enjoyed herself and her time spent with everyone.

As a grandma, she never missed an opportunity to babysit, attend events, cheer at sport games or hunker down on a snow day to play board games.

As an active parishioner at St. Mark the Evangelist Church, she tended to the alter linens, established a coffee club, and taught religious education, developing close friendships with her church folks and the clergy. All of this and more earned her the Archdiocese of Hartford's Medal of Appreciation. Countless sandwiches for the homeless were made in her house with love and she served meals to the Loaves and Fishes Ministries community in need.

Calling hours will be Friday, December 29, 2023, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the Sheehan Hilborn Breen Funeral Home, 1084 New Britain Avenue, West Hartford, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mark the Evangelist Church, 467 South Quaker Lane, West Hartford, CT at 11:00 a.m. (please meet the family at the church), with burial immediately following at Fairview Cemetery, West Hartford, CT.
