John Flynn Obituary

FLYNN, John "Jack" Jr. John "Jack" Thomas Flynn Jr., 77, of Wethersfield, beloved husband of Abigail (Moriarty) Flynn, entered into eternal peace Tuesday (September 11, 2007) at Mapleview Manor, Rocky Hill. Jack was born August 6, 1930 in Brooklyn, NY, son of the late John Thomas Flynn Sr. and Virginia (Gray) Flynn. He was a graduate of Bishop Loughlin High School and Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Jack was a United States Army Veteran during the Korean Conflict, serving in the 8th Army Headquarters Fire Department. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Service Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal and the Meritorious Unit Commendation. Upon his discharge from the military, he went to work as an Engineer for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. Jack was at times an athlete, a scientist whose work is in the National Air and Space Museum, a longtime volunteer at Connecticut Public Television, a member of various town boards and commissions, and a Communicant of St. Patrick and St. Anthony Church in Hartford. He never lost his love for the Brooklyn Dodgers and became a devoted Red Sox and UCONN Husky fan. In addition to his wife of 48 years, Abigail, John shall fondly be remembered by his sons, John Christopher Flynn and his wife, Elizabeth Cosgrove of Southington, Timothy M. Flynn of Boston, MA, and Brendan T. Flynn and his wife, Nancy of Wethersfield; his daughter, Judith Ellen Flynn and her husband, Richard McMahon of Marlborough; six grandchildren, Katie, Liam, Matthew, Brennan, Sydney and Sara; and two step-grandsons, Sean and Patrick; his sister-in-law, Phyllis Flynn; his brothers-in-law, Richard and Thomas; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, James. Jack's family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Mark Izard and his staff and the entire staff of Maple View Manor for all their care during his illness. Funeral Services will be held Saturday September 15, at 8:30 a.m. from the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrating John's life at 9:30 a.m. in the St. Patrick and St. Anthony Church, 285 Church St., Hartford. Interment will be in the Connecticut State Veterans Cemetery, Bow Lane, Middletown. John's family will receive relatives and friends Friday, September 14, at the Funeral Home from 3-7 p.m. Memorial donations may be made in Jack's name to Dollars for Scholars, PO Box 290338, Wethersfield, CT 06129-0338.

Aunt Gail, Chris, Tim, Brendan, Judy and family

The Southern Flynn's send our deepest sympathies over the loss of Uncle Jack. I'm sorry it wasn't until later in my life that I realized how much Uncle Jack and I were alike. Having him attend my Master's graduation is something I will always remember with a smile on my face. He fit in so well with my engineering friends, you would have though he was still in his 20's.

This is in stark contrast to my earliest memories of Uncle Jack as that stern Uncle who made us go to bed early when traveled up from Delaware for a visit.

Being a University of Delaware grad put us on opposite sides of the field during football season, but I do still root for UCONN when appropriate.

Our thoughts and best wishes are with you!

Love
