Joseph Sadowski Obituary

Joseph S. Sadowski, MD, 71, of Farmington, formerly of West Hartford, died Monday, (June 18, 2001) at his home after an extended illness. Born in Throop, PA, January 24, 1930, the son of Joseph and Mary Sadowski, he graduated from Throop High School at the age of 17 and went on to attend Scranton University on a basketball scholarship, where he played center and received a BS Degree in 1951. After receiving academic scholarships, he attended Georgetown University College of Medicine in Washington, DC and graduated valedictorian of his class in 1955. He completed an internship in general surgery at Robert Packard Hospital in Sayre, PA and was a resident in General Surgery at St. Vincent in Worcester, MA. In 1957, he was commissioned an officer in the U.S. Navy and served as a ship's doctor aboard the USS Lake Champlain until receiving an honorable discharge in 1959. He continued his medical training as a resident in Neurosurgery at Georgetown University and, in 1963, set up practice in Hartford. Dr. Sadowski was a Staff Neurosurgeon at St. Francis Hospital and Rockville General Hospital. During his career, he served in numerous leadership roles with the Hartford County Medical Association and the Connecticut State Medical Society, and had been a senior delegate of the American Medical Association. As the President of the Connecticut State Medical Society in 1984, Dr. Sadowski organized and chaired an Ad Hoc Committee to study the feasibility of forming a malpractice insurance company and, under his direction, the Connecticut Medical Insurance Company (CMIC) was founded in 1984. He maintained a key leadership role with the CMIC, serving on the board of directors and numerous committees, including the Executive Committee and the Finance committee, which he chaired from 1993 to 2000. The Connecticut State Medical Society recently established The Joseph S. Sadowski Scholarship, to be awarded annually to medical students or residents in training in Connecticut for furthering their understanding of medical policy and politics. Dr. Sadowski received many and varied awards for his dedication to his patients and his profession, including the Outstanding Physician of St. Francis Hospital in 1999. He is survived by his wife, Judy Linger, MD; his three daughters, Christine Sadowski of Rochester, MN; Victoria Tyler and her husband, Thomas of New Hartford, and Katherine Sadowski of Brooklyn, NY; his sister, Pearl Tyburski of Derby; his brother and sister-in-law, Edward and Marge Sadowski of Throop, PA; and his granddaughter, Morgan Tyler. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated Friday, June 22, 5:30 p.m., at The Church of St. Timothy, 1116 North Main Street, West Hartford. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
