Paul KARAM Obituary

KARAM, Paul John

Paul John Karam, 71, of Essex, formerly of Kensington, peacefully passed away, Monday, (October 3, 2011) surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with leukemia. Born in New Britain, CT he was the son of the late John and Nanajan (Kanish) Karam. He graduated from New Britain High School and went on to obtain his Bachelor of Music degree at Boston University, later earning advanced degrees at CCSC and UCONN. A dedicated music educator for more than 35 years, he began his career in Poughkeepsie, NY but soon relocated back to CT where he worked in the Berlin Public Schools, the majority of his career as the Director of Music for the district. He touched the lives of countless students many of whom went on to pursue careers as musicians and music educators. His love of music was second only to his love and dedication to his family. Along with his high school sweetheart and wife of 49 years, Mary (Flood) of Essex, he is survived by his four children, Cori Humes and her husband Brian of Kensington, Christopher Karam and his wife Alison of Killingworth, Heather Price and her husband Kevin of East Haddam, and Patricia Wyskiewicz and her husband James of New Britain. His pride and radiant joy were his eight grandchildren: Kelly and Steven Humes; Paul Karam; Sarah and Christopher Price; Tristan, Landon, and Aiden Wyskiewicz. He also leaves his brother, Albert and wife Gleora of Westbrook, many nieces and nephews, and was predeceased by his sister, Rose Karam.

I am sorry to hear of Mr Karams passing.I was a student when he first came to Berlin High.I have thought of his words many time over the years since High School.I was a lost insecure brat, but he was the one who made me believe that my one little note counted. It has been something that I have carried with me all my life and am truly greatful for his giving of it to me.

Dear Karam family,
I offer my deepest sympathy to you for the loss of your loved one. I was in the band for four years and Mr. Karam had a great impact on me. He was a great leader and had a way of making every band member feel important. He was so dedicated and committed it was contagious. May God give you the strength to accept his will.

Dear Karam Family,

I just learned today of Mr. Karam's passing. I am overwhelmed with sadness of this news. He was one of my dad's best friends and I will never forget how he held me up at my dad's wake. Never. Mr. Karam was the best and I was so lucky to bump into him years ago at McGee where I have one daughter left in that school and two at BHS. I remember being at the Big E with my dad and seeing Mr. Karam's band perform. So many great memories. My heart goes out to each of you. I know he's up there with Gino having one great blast. With much love, Laura (Lattanzio) McNamara

It is very difficult to truly express the respect and admiration I had for Mr. Karam throughout my life. Not only was he a great influence on me as a musician, he was also a positive influence on me as a young man. I feel privelaged to have spent time with the entire Karam family as a friend in addition to a student. Seeing the love of family behind the public view of the director offered a view only his family usually experienced. He will be missed dearly, but his leagacy lives on in all who remember him. My sincerest sympathies go out to the Karam family. God bless!

Words can not express our sorrow for Mary and their wonderful family. We hope your memories will bring you comfort. He was a truly good person who will be missed by so many. John and Arlene

Dear Karam Family,
Reading of Paul's passing, brought a flood of memories; from his hilarious impressions of the characters of F Troop and his appreciation for Dave Bergeron and Blood Sweat and Tears to a wickedly cold and rainy band trip to BU one fall. His intensity for excellence, and enthusiasm for life will be with me always. Please accept my sympathy, and know thoughts and prayers are with you all. Sincerely, Jim McNair

The the Karam Family,

My sincerest condolences to all of you. When Patty met and eventually married my cousin, Jim, she was welcome into our family as seamlessly as all of you welcomed us into yours. I know and witnessed the love that Mr. Karam (Paul) had for his family and understand the loss you feel. May his now being at peace, with his sister Rose (who I got to know well at South Church) bring some comfort at this most difficult time.

Much Love
