Our deepest sympathy to the family. Pete will be missed as a cousin. He was a fine person who we all enjoyed seeing at Batten family picnics.

Dear Jean, Diane and I are so sorry to hear of the passing of Peter and we cherish the many, many memories over the years of knowing the two of you. Peter was very special and I remember vividly working with him every day in the Penney High English Department in the late sixties and most of the seventies. He always had a smile and a kind word for everyone and he never failed to have something to offer in any conversation that was on going. I remember being amazed at his breath of knowledge and ability to recall obscure facts from his voracious reading. We kiddingly called him BK Mahler (Book of Knowledge) but his mind was amazing. He loved you and the kids even more than he loved being a Marine, and that's saying something. He did pretty good for a "village kid" and I was fortunate to have him as a friend. Be well. You are in our thoughts. Doug

I am saddened to learn of Mr. Mahler's passing. Although I never had him as a teacher, he was ever present in the hallways and basketball games at PHS in the 80's, and he always smiled and said hello. He seemed to really care about all the students. Mrs. Mahler, my thoughts are with you at this time

Dear Mrs. Mahler, I was thinking about you the other day, how you helped me get my first contracted teaching job at PHS after substituting several years at the middle school I am still so appreciative. You and Mr. Mahler are fine people who have touched many hearts. My love and prayers for you and yours. Christine Yates Trevett

JABBERWOCKY
Lewis Carroll
(from Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There, 1872)
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.
"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"
He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.
And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!
One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.
"And, has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'
He chortled in his joy.
`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

I hated this poem, but Mr. Mahler made us memorize it. It was the great beginning of public speaking instruction which has helped us all so much as adults in later years to come. God bless you and your family, Mr. Mahler. You will be missed.

I had Mr. Mahler for freshman English and Miss Mirecki for sophomore English, way back in the 60s. Both wonderful teachers. I had Mr. Mahler first period and he was so patient with my many late arrivals. He was such a kind man, lots of fun, full of good stories, and always a gentleman. My condolences to his family.

It is with deep sadness to have learned of Peter's passing. I've known Peter since attending college with his sister Mary Beth. He always impressed me as an upstanding, fair-minded, and savvy type of guy. His devotion his wife and children and family members were admirable as was his dedication to his friends and his profession as a teacher.
Words cannot heal the deep loss experienced by his family at this time. Hopefully the knowledge that Peter still lives in our memory and that he is now embraced by loved ones who have gone before will ease the burden in time.
With deepest condolences to his family,
Ann and Andrea Beaudin
