R. Doran Obituary



R. Oliver Doran, 72, of Hartford, beloved husband of Shirley (Scott) Doran and father of Gordon Doran, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital surrounded by his family and friends. He was born in Claremont, St. Ann, Jamaica, on March 12, 1941, to the late Basil Doran, Sr. and Daisy (Williams) Doran. He attended elementary school in Claremont and Kingston Technical High School in Jamaica. In1966 he migrated to the United States and settled in Hartford. He was first employed by American Standard and then by Emhart Corporation where he worked until his retirement in 1999. Oliver, was an avid Red Sox fan, he enjoyed cooking and entertaining his family and friends, and listening to music. He was a perfectionist who took enormous pride in caring for his lawn and maintaining a neat and well-ordered home. In addition to his loving wife Shirley V. Doran of 47 years, he leaves his son Gordon and his wife Andrea of Manchester; three adored grandchildren, Gordon Jr., Janessa, Jacob and two step-grandchildren, Joshua and Brandon; two brothers, Basil Doran, Jr. and his wife Lynette of Florida and Desmond Doran and his wife Joan of Ottawa, Canada; three sisters, Gloria Chambers of Florida, Marie Weise of Florida, Cecille Campbell and her husband Con of Ottawa, Canada; and his sister-in-law Effie Doran of New York. A brother-in-law, Hudson Scott and his wife Grace of Hartford; two sisters-in-law, Dahlia Thompson of Florida, Sheila Barnes and her husband Lloyd of Florida; several nieces and nephews, including Michael Chambers and his wife Marge and Tony Chambers and his wife Carol of Bloomfield, several cousins and numerous extended family members and friends. In addition to his parents he was predeceased, by his brother, Jack Doran. His funeral will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 1, 2014 at North United Methodist Church, 1205 Albany Ave., in Hartford with calling hours from 9-10 a.m. prior to the service. Interment will follow at Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial donations to the Collin Bennett Building Window Program at North United Methodist Church.
