Robert Novak Obituary

Robert A. Novak, Sr., 80, of Middletown, CT, husband of Barbara Roberts Novak for 56 years, died on December 8, 2023 at home in Middletown, CT after a long illness following a stroke. Bob was born on August 20, 1943 in Middletown, CT, son of the late Rose (Duda) and Frank Novak. He was a 1961 graduate of Middletown High School and received his BA from Central Connecticut State University. He served proudly in the United States Marine Corps. He was a Credit Manager for Detroit Strip and Concord Steel Corporations. He also worked for many years at Lyman's Golf Course and as an Evening Site Supervisor for Middletown Adult Education. Bob treasured his home and especially his immaculate yard. His peaceful place was riding his tractor mower, which he did often. During the summer, he enjoyed his time living at the beach cottage in Westbrook, CT where family and friends gathered. He was an avid sports fan who loved watching his favorite teams and cheering on his children and grandchildren at their athletic events. Bob's rounds of golf, morning walks and monthly card games with 'the guys' were very special to him. Bob was a very giving man. He was quick to lend a helping hand to anyone who needed it. He was happiest when spending time with his family and friends. He especially cherished his role as Grandpa. In addition to his wife, Barbara, Bob is survived by his children and their families, including: daughter Jill Shakun, her husband Brian and their children, Abigail and Patrick of Ivoryton, CT; son Gregory Novak, his wife Krystl and their children, Madilyn and Seth of San Diego, CA; Sage Novak, widow of son Robert and their children, Grace and Natalie of Deep River; and Sage's husband, Dan Kollmer. Bob was predeceased by his son Robert A. Novak, Jr. In addition, Bob leaves his brother and wife, David (Joanne) Novak of Chardon, OH and two brothers-in- law and their wives, Eugene (Cindy) Roberts, of Bonita Springs, FL, and Donald (Angela) Roberts of Portland, CT. He also leaves his eight nieces and nephews and their families who meant so much to him.

The family would like to thank Sheila from the Visiting Angels via the Veteran's Administration who was Bob's caring aide for the past year as well as the members of the Middlesex Hospital Hospice team who provided care for Bob during the past few months. Bob's family will receive friends at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver Street, Middletown, CT Sunday, December 17, 2023, from 4 to 6 pm. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated on Monday, December 18, 2023 at 11am at St. Joseph's Church of St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish, 48 Middlesex Turnpike, Chester, CT. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be sent to Middlesex Hospice Homecare, c/o Dept. of Philanthropy, 28 Crescent St., Middletown, CT 06457 or a charity you'd like to support. To the family of Robert "Bob" Novak: so sorry to hear about your loss. I knew Bob as a customer at Liberty Bank and it was always a pleasure to talk to him so many times. I got to know him really well and used to call him "Jim Otto" after the famous Oakland Raiders center! I even gave him a Jim Otto football card one time! He usually would come in and wait for me in order for me to do his banking and then we would have a conversation about almost anything! Bob was a great guy and I will miss him.
