William McCarthy Obituary

Father William John McCarthy, MSA (Father Bill) beloved priest, uncle, brother, cousin, spiritual director, evangelist, and teacher, was called to heaven on June 8, 2021 surrounded by his family at St. Francis Hospital, Hartford, CT. He was born on May 19, 1934 in Hartford, CT and lived a magnificent life in dedication to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. As the son of William and Alice McCarthy, Father Bill grew up in West Hartford and attended William H. Hall High School (Hall High) where he was a star athlete in baseball and basketball. He attended St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, CT and was ordained as a Catholic priest in Rome on December 20, 1959 for the Archdiocese of Hartford. He served as Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Pompeii, East Haven; St. Joseph's, Meriden; St. Francis of Assisi, Torrington; St. Mary's, East Hartford, St. Luke's, Hartford; and as Co-Pastor at St. Anthony's in Bristol. When he was assigned to St. Mary's he became known as "the priest in the yellow bus." He acquired an aging school bus and used it to transport the elderly to church or wherever they had to go and to take parish children on excursions to such places as Holy Land in Waterbury and Riverside Park in Agawam. In 1983, Father Bill became a member of the Missionaries of the Holy Apostles and founded his unique vision, My Father's House Retreat Center in Moodus, CT along with Sister Bernadette Sheldon, CSJ. As a Spiritual Director of My Father's House for over 36 years, Father Bill dedicated his life to leading retreats and missions, counseling, writing, teaching, speaking, and spiritual direction. He established relationships with some of the most influential spiritual and evangelical leaders in the world and shared a special audience with Pope John Paul II, a meaningful moment in his life. He is the author of over 30 books including but not limited to: Listening to God, A Personal Relationship with Jesus, The Our Father, Mary in the Church Today, The Holy Spirit in the Writings of John Paul II, God Bless America, and Being Virtuous in a Non-Virtuous World. For over 60 years he traveled extensively throughout the United States and to the Holy Land for several missions including being a part of The Holy Land Rosary with Father Mitch Pacwa on EWTN. He also directed the television program In His Name on Connecticut Public Access Television. As a teacher, Father Bill taught scripture and spirituality at Catholic high schools and taught at the seminary at Holy Apostles in Cromwell, CT where he also served as spiritual director and a member of the Provincial Council. As an evangelist, he has been active in the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship International (FGBMFI) and Aglow meetings and created his own lay evangelism team who works with giving retreats and conferences. His thoughtful and meaningful words of wisdom (either spoken or sung) were much adored and he was invited to speak at hundreds of churches throughout North America. He has been honorary speaker at Eucharistic, Charismatic, and Marian Conferences throughout the USA, Canada, and Ireland and has been curate, pastor, and spiritual leader in the Ecumenical, Cursillo, Charismatic, Marriage Encounter, and Marian movements in the Church. His contagious smile, charismatic personality, loving presence, and endless energy were well known. He made lifelong friendships and it was a wonder to witness his ability to balance attention to daily commitments and to those who required his counseling--his focus was always on the individual person and their desire to create and maintain a personal relationship with Christ. His dedication to area families, the sick, and the unfortunate never stopped. He worked tirelessly to grow and nurture My Father's House, a special place of restoration and healing for many. He retired as Spiritual Director from My Father's House in 2019 and with the help of his family, continued to share his love of Christ with family and friends. As part of a large Irish-Catholic family, Father Bill cherished his Irish heritage and every member of his family. Many family members share special memories of working at My Father's House as painters, carpenters, landscapers, cleaners, and cooks. With the help of many hands and generous donors, the former 60-acre Jewish retreat center called "Orchard Mansion" was transformed into My Father's House. He loved sports and often took nieces and nephews to Fenway Park for Red Sox games and with a precise jump shot, was a clutch member of many pickup basketball teams at family reunions. He is survived by his sister Kathleen Dunn (Richard) of Berlin, CT, brother-in-law Robert Oliva, of Windsor Locks, CT and sister-in-law Patricia McCarthy, of Kearney, MO. He is predeceased by his parents William and Alice McCarthy, sister Mary Anne Skelly (Joseph), brother James J. McCarthy, and sister Alice Oliva (Robert). He was blessed with dozens of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins, who fondly remember his love, laughter, and singing of When Irish Eyes are Smiling and God Bless America. His dedication to the love of Jesus Christ stemmed from the love and encouragement bestowed to him by his parents which would inspire him throughout his life. Visitation is scheduled on Wednesday June 16, 2021 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield, A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday June 17, 2021 at 10:00am in Saint James Church of Saint Josephine Bahkita Parish. Internment will follow Mass at Rose Hill Cemetery in Rocky Hill, CT. Online condolences may be expressed at Farleysullivan.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Renewal Ministries, P.O. Fr. Bill was my Spiritual Director and Good Friend. He was like a father to me! I really miss him. He was a literal modern day saint and he had supernatural gifts like some of the greatest saints had. I often benefited from those giftes and charisms! The amazing testimonies and stories I could share! The miracles! Jesus spoke to me many times through Fr. Bill! I really miss this priest!

Father Bill, , one of the most extraordinary persons, really a saint, I have ever met. He set an example for all of us who wish to use Christ´s Message as a guidebook for our lives. May he remember all of us in his prayers from heaven.

It is with sorrow that I note your obituary, Fr Bill, but how can we be sad for long, knowing you are with your Lord whom you so beautifully taught us , or rather insisted, that we maintain a personal relationship with at all times, from now to eternity? What a grace and gift you were to me at a most difficult time in my life! I will never forget your love for me and everyone--the true love of God the Father. You represented His love to us so beautifully. Thank you Fr Bill, and please intercede for us as we strive to reach our home in Heaven-where you already are!

My Personal Profile of Father William McCarthy:
Fr. "Bill"? Who is he, you ask??
-"No `Ordinary´ Priest"-
...In case you have not had the pleasure of "meeting" him,
"Fr. Bill" was: "A Priest", and a: "friend to all"; -a warm, loving,
Priest, -endowed with a magnanimous heart, magnetic personality, and
possessing astounding endless energy! --Bubbling over with joy, and
"reaching out"- with: "ease and know-how" -to as many people as he could
possibly encompass during his entire busy day; --an "Intellect" with many
"Talents", -Who could "Sing" -and "Dance," -and "Pantomime"; who:
"Recited: "Poetry", and "Soliloquized", -and in other ways, could Entertain.
He was one who showed: unique, genuine concern for each and every
individual -enveloping them in his contagious: Joy and Love, -healing their:
"inner" wounds, -and making them aware that they are: "very precious",
and very "special"!
His "charisma" attracted people -men and women alike - with a
compulsion to: "follow him", to: "be in his "presence", to: "hear and hang on
to: his words and teachings, -and to: experience the: "uplifting and cleansing"
attained through the knowledge he taught of: "A Compassionate and
Forgiving God".
He was one who (had to) become used to: others expressing love for him,
hugging him, and striving (even conniving) to: detain him "just a bit longer",
-because of the "gift" he possessed of making them feel: "whole".
A fun-loving priest who was not afraid to mix in with his people,
to know them, to laugh with them, and to love them; --who could relate to
each one alike regardless of age, sex, group or status.
Yet he at all times commanded: the greatest of Respect, and was looked
up to and Admired by all who knew him - for he "radiated": the "Presence
of God "within him.
For first, and foremost, he was: "A man of God", -doing "His" Holy work
and "His" Holy Will --as his every thought, word, and action constantly
proclaimed: ...GOD IS FIRST in his life -and this was the clear example he
set: for all of us!
His ways were: "God´s ways", his "teachings" were of God´s: "Love and
Caring"; and of "The Holy Spirit -which God sends "within" us -so that we
may have: the "Obedience" to: listen to His word, the "Wisdom" to: know and
understand His: Will, and the Power to: carry it out -with the Love, Joy and
Peace in our Heart that enables us to: "Go Forth" -and "Reach Out To Help
Others".
He further enlightens that God: has a "Plan" for each of us and
that by: Taking up our "Y-O-K-E" -which is: to-Yield Ourselves to the
King in Everything- We Can, in fact, become: Other: "Jesuses" in the World!
.....HOW VERY FORTUNATE AND VERY BLESSED I AM
TO HAVE KNOWN: FR. BILL McCARTHY!

I met Fr. McCarthy at the age of 8 years old while I was a student at St. Francis of Assisi School, in Torrington, CT. Meeting and becoming a young friend of this phenomenal human being, Father McCarthy is a man who has left a forever presence in my heart for so many reasons. My family moved from Torrington, CT, to Juno Beach, FL, when I had turned seventeen. Emotionally I never left this phenomenal human being behind~he remained, and will remain, in my heart and prayers forever. For so many reasons I wish I had the opportunity to see him again, first and foremost to thank him for so much, including stopping by our classrooms on Friday afternoons twenty minutes prior to the bell ringing ending the school week with the exception of a `ton´ of homework. During the visit Fr. McCarthy, with all his charm, could convince our Nun to forego the weekend assignment, Fr. McCarthy had a way a performing minor miracles on many Friday afternoons.
Father McCarthy please Rest In Peace though continue singing in Heaven. If you happen to run across my parents please tell them they are dearly missed and loved; they will be thrilled to meet up with you again.
You remain forever in my heart.

Fr. Bill, we miss you! A group of your friends and Fr. Marty had mass, rosary and then went to the cemetary to pray and sing some of "your" songs. Afterward we had adoration and over lunch we talked about your many books and lessons. You touched so many, and so profoundly. Enjoy heaven, dear friend!

I miss you you alot. You were my spiritual director as well as like a father to me. I still have not been able to replace you yet and if I do, no doubt the next one will never have the supernatural gifts and charisms that you had. We lost a tremendously important priest when we lost you Fr. Bill. You will be forever in my heart and memory. God Bless and Keep You. Rest In Peace Father. You are loved so much. - Steve DiNello

Fr. Bill was tremendously kind and holy and true. You can´t ask for more than that in a priest. May God let him in immediately. My Father´s House was a great blessing to the whole state. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Fr. Bill McCarthy. This must be a huge loss to all of you. I made a donation to Renewal Ministries in memory of and in thanksgiving for the life. His authentic faith made me believe in the Father's tender love for all of us and for me. I will forever be grateful for that. I have no doubt that he is beholding Him as He is, face to face in eternity. Pray for us Fr. Bill that we may love the Father of tender Mercies and reflect His love to all like you did.

Fr. Bill was a priest of the people, both a leader and a servant. He had a giant presence and was an expert story-teller. He loved to memorize and recite scripture and poetry, especially the poem, The Christmas Guest, at each Christmas Eve Mass. Bill also shared many dinners at my family's table and he loved to shoot free throws on our backyard basketball court. I'd feed him the ball as he swished shot after shot with that classic release. He was driven as much by the challenge of basketball as he was directing My Father's House, authoring books, and providing spiritual guidance to so many who demanded his time. One thing I will always remember is how, at the end of each Mass, Bill would say, ‘The Mass is really just beginning.’ That took some time for my teenage brain to grasp at that time, but now I get it. I believe Bill’s legacy and spirit is only just beginning too.

I have many memories of Father Bill, Sister Bernadette and My Father's House. Because of Father Bill's exceptional faith Moodus CT and surrounding towns were blessed to have My Father's House established. Father Bill's robust presence and affirming manner made everyone feel welcome there. Now in Heaven with Sister Bernadette, Blanche, Molly, and others who served with him, he is in the ultimate Father's House. Can you just imagine, the JOY!

I cherish the memory of pilgrimage to the Holy Land with Fr. Bill and Sister Bernie in 1987. Will miss his warm, welcoming personality and the way he extended the love of Jesus to all. Thursday mornings were always special at My Fathers House as well as the many retreats led by Fr. Bill. I was especially appreciative of the Marian and Eucharistic spirituality he brought to the community which I feel is so needed by the Church today. Well done Fr. Bill!

Fr. Bill Mccarthy was one of the greatest servants of GOD I ever new! He was a GIFT from GOD for the whole world! We did many ministries together. I was a young man when My Father's House first opened. I was there the 1st week he took possession of the property painting cabins. The 1st program we ever did together, we did a weekend for boys and girls in maximum security prision. We brought them with armed guards to My Fathers House. That was one of the most powerful experinces of my life! We did so many other programs together over all these many years!
BE AT PEACE GOOD and FAITHFUL SERVANT! PLEASE PRAY FOR US!

Father Bill was/is a saint. I grew very close with him throughout 2018 and 2019, and last saw him in February of 2020. He helped me to find my faith, and treated me so lovingly as the Good Shepard would with the lost sheep. I cannot begin to describe all the wonderful insights, spiritual gifts, prayer, and teachings — he was a very real vessel for the Holy Spirit, and I will be forever grateful. I will be re-visiting the various notes, recordings, and books filled with his unique insights. He brought thousands of people into a personal relationship with Jesus and always made time for those who needed him. Alleluia and welcome home. I picture Mary greeting you in Heaven and giving you a big hug. Praise the Lord!

June 14, 2021

My name is Ted Flynn and I live in Northern Virginia. In 1994 I met Father Bill after he asked me to come to My Father's House and give a talk on the overview of Marian apparitions that I had assembled in a book called the The Thunder of Justice. Over the years I gave 5 talks there which were all thoroughly enjoyable, and I often stayed at good friends house by the name of Bob and Meg Malafronte in Middletown. They were also close friends of Father Bill for decades. I was from Rhode Island and I saw how vibrant faith had been nearly snuffed out in all but a few places in New England. After traveling the world, I saw New England as a spiritually dark place. I called him The Light of New England in all of my talks there to let the people know they had to continue supporting his ministry in Connecticut. Over the years we traded news, issues, and the general direction of faith in the world. He frequently wrote articles for our family magazine called Signs of the Times, and we distributed his books. When friends got together who spoke at venues worldwide, there was never a time where the name Father Bill McCarthy didn't come up as he had hundreds of speakers come in over the 35 years that he ran My Father's House. I spoke more with him when he moved to Massachusetts as his health declined. He was reflective on his years in the priesthood and life in general. There was one particular time my wife and I were at My Father's House around the yard 2000 where we look back to see the heart of the man. When we walked in the kitchen through the side door we heard him talking in the main area saying, " God Loves you, and I love You." We peeked in and saw there were several dozen severely handicapped young girls and boys he was ministering to. When he saw us he came over and said, "these people are going straight to heaven when the die -- every one of them." I was most touched because of how much dignity he had given to them who were incapable of doing so little for themselves. As his health declined his niece Kelly and her family played a major supportive role. She and her family should be commended, as anyone who has nursed and older person in declining health knows how much work it is. Many of us have been there. I can't help but think as Father's spirit passed into a new place, the first words he heard upon entry were, "well done, good and faithful servant, you are now home." You are now home and you have reaped your eternal reward. You will be missed. Ted Flynn

Fr. Bill was a wonderful man and very near and dear to my entire family. He helped us in many ways and was always there for us in time of need. My wife, Pat adored Fr. Bill and for many years we always tried to make the 1:30pm Mass at my Father's House. After Mass he would always invite us to stay for coffee and doughnuts and just talk, many times about sports which we had a lot in common. Many times, even going out and shooting hoops in the driveway. I will never forget Fr. Bill and how good he was to us. He and Sister Bernadette were a wonderful team and did so much for everyone. I'm sure that they are both in front row seats in Heaven and still praying for all of us. Rest In Peace Fr. Bill and thank you for the shining light that you instilled in all of us.

I had the opportunity to attend one retreat at My Fathers House about fifteen years ago and I had the extreme privilege of having Fr. Bill leading the retreat.I knew I was in the presence of a Saint ! Having seen Fr. Bill at healing masses in my church only confirmed his Saintly stature. When reading the Holy Gospel, he did something unusual. He never looked at the reading directly from the book because he had the Gospel memorized!!! He was unlike any Priest I have ever met and he was an incredible gift from God . He will be sorely missed as this world was a better place because of him.To his family, I am profoundly sorry for his loss. His retreat house is the best in all of Connecticut. What we remember most was his steel-trap memory of Scripture, poems, and songs (along with his own favorite truisms) that he recited spontaneously as GOD the Holy Spirit inspired him. Rest in Peace, dear extraordinary Man of GOD. Now, at last, you are eternally in My Father's House. AMEN!

Fr Bill frequently visited my parish, St Patrick in East Hampton, when I was in high school to celebrate the Life Teen Mass. It was always a pleasure to serve Mass for him. May God grant him eternal rest, and comfort to your family.

Father Bill took many of us to retreats when I was in high school in the big bus. I loved this man. May you rest in peace.

So many memories of Father in the early 60's at St. Lukes Church. We had a very active youth group where he served as a confident to many. After Mass he would cross the street to enjoy family dinners and stir the pot regarding religion. Rest now, enjoy the fruits of your labor in Heaven.

You were the inspiration of this priest of the class of 1973 from St. Francis in Torrington. Thankfully I was able to spend many private retreats with Fr. Bill at My Fathers's House. May you Rest In Peace.

I can't help but smile, just thinking about Fr Bill, and knowing how jubilantly he was received in heaven. He was unstoppable! He loved my family, and we all loved him. A few years ago, not long before he left his ministry at My Father's House, he phoned my husband and me, and asked if he could have a home mass at our house in Colchester. Of course, we said yes, and invited people to join us. Fr Bill drove himself in a snowstorm, in an aging van, and never blinked an eye. The mass was personal, warm, full of heartfelt love, spirited teaching (and of course the gospel was memorized.) At the end of the evening, he hobbled out to the van (now covered in snow) and after we helped him clear it off, and clear the driveway, he drove back to Moodus, still his unflappable, Spirit-filled self, always looking for another opportunity to praise Jesus with his life. I don't know when/how he managed to memorize so many passages, from great swaths of scripture to a speech by Bobby Kennedy to full paragraphs from the documents written by our founding fathers, but he did! Fr Bill had a great brain, in addition to his heart fully sold out to Jesus. Heaven is richer. Oh my goodness, yes. Heaven is so much richer. Thank you Fr Bill, for your influence on my life. I shall never cease to be grateful.

We met Fr. Bill on the Search for Christian Maturity retreats and loved his infectious smile, his love for Jesus, and his trust in the power of the Holy Spirit. He presided at our wedding and has been a trusted friend ever since. We are "United in the Lord Jesus."

Fr. Bill was my beloved Spiritual Director. He and I witnessed a few miracles together and the Lord spoke to him and through him regarding me several times. I last saw Fr. Bill in January of 2019 where he told me that Jesus said that I would be accepted into seminary and infact I was, a few months later I moved out of state to enter seminary. I haven't seen or heard from Fr. Bill since until I recieved the sad news of his passing. I loved him like a father. He was so very good to me and was profoundly helpful to my spiritual walk with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He will be very missed. He is irreplaceable. He was indeed a modern day SAINT with strong supernatural gifts.
God Bless You and Keep You Fr. Bill. Pray for me from Heaven as I pray for you on Earth. Rest In Peace Fr. Bill...and THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE FOR ME.

Sincerwly, Steven Raffaele DiNello

Fr. Bill taught me a great deal about our faith. He would take the tome to spend with me and teach me. His heart was so big and always willing to help anyone. I accompanied Fr. Bill on many missions and home Masses and that is where I had learned a lot. Fr. Bill you will be missed by many. You are now home with the Lord. You will always have a special place in my heart. I love you and will miss you.

Father Bill was an inspiration. He is loved, respected and admired by his loyal "faith family" who attend "My Father's House", his wonderful, irreplacable legacy to CT.
Priest, mentor, teacher, advisor...most of all, beloved friend.
He will live forever in our prayers, our memories, our hearts and the MFH community he built and loved.
