Malcolm Moran Obituary

Malcolm Moran
March 27, 1923 ~ September 18, 2011

CARMEL - Sculptor Malcolm Moran passed away on September 18, 2011 at high noon at the age of 88. He was born with a twin brother into a Seattle pioneering family who later settled on Orcas Island in Washington. He studied at the Cornish Art Institute and University of Washington in Seattle, Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles, Kobe University in Japan, and Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI. He started his career as a designer in advanced styling concepts for General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, and Boeing in the 1950s and was appointed the art director of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair.
Malcolm then moved to Carmel in 1963 and opened Gallery Carmel, which was a stage for his cast of thousands. He was also a partner in the Hog's Breath restaurant and had his home and gallery memorialized in the movie "Play Misty for Me". One of Malcolm's greatest honors was being invited by President Ford and his wife, Betty to have a showing of his art at the White House.
In addition to Malcolm's art career, he was also a proud member of the military beginning with the Merchant Marines Academy in California and later serving in the Army as a First Lieutenant during WWII.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Jodi; his son, Bob Moran; daughters, Kathy Moore, Callie Moran, and Mandy Moran. Also son-in-law, Dick Moore; daughter-in-law, Helen Moran and grandson, Russel Moran. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Reeves Moran.
A close friend once described Malcolm as living his life striving to do the unexpected; keeping every thing on a delicate balance of suspense with one never knowing in what direction his creative genius would go next.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Malcolm's memory to The Carmel Foundation. Malcolm's celebration of life will be held on his favorite holiday, Thanksgiving at Carmel River Beach at 2:00pm.

To Jodi and your family - i am a little behind and just saw this. The art world lost not only a talented man but a very sweet man who took the time to chat with me. I remember being nervous as i was in awe of him and his talent. I feel sad but lucky that i can pass his art down to my children to keep his memory alive.

Jodie, I am sorry to hear of Malcolm's death just now and would have wanted to attend his memorial service had I known. It was an honor to have known him and a greater honor to have had him as a cherished friend. As I had told Malcolm through the years, I felt he was with me every day as I passed my children crossing the stream on my way to the kitchen for morning coffee. There could never be another Malcolm Moran as he was truly the only "one of a kind" person I have ever known, I will miss him for the rest of my life!

Jodi, I just saw this on Facebook as we didn't know. We cherish all of Malcolm's works we have and the life size Children Crossing the Stream he did my mother has in her home. Everywhere we turn Malcolm is with us as are our fond memories of you. Thank you for adding so much to our lives. His spirit will live on forever in the hearts of everyone who knew him and the art he leaves all over the world.

My condolences go out to Jodi, Mandy, and the rest of the family. I used to babysit for Mandy when she was a child. I remember Malcolm was always a kind, gentle man. I was thrilled when Jodi gave me one of his sculptures. It is interesting to read about his life and the Herald did a nice job.

To the Moran family,
I fondly remember my visits to the Gallery Carmel where I would see Malcom and Don working away with the glow of their torches. It was a special, whimiscal place where one could dream just looking at the creations. The smells, the sounds and Don's parrots. As a lad of only 17, I could not keep away. One day I was wearing a purple workshirt that my mom had incorrectly dyed. Malcom wanted that shirt real bad and
offered me $15 for it plus his (then) ugly shirt which I could have done without. But $15 to a 17year old! So after much deliberation, I took the offer. Malcom was always welcoming and friendly and liked all the girls I would bring with me. I miss that gallery and I miss the friendship I made with Malcom and Don. It was such a great life then. Rest in peace Malcom and see into the dreams you created through your art for so may people!

Malcolm was a handsome rogue whose shop was near mine in Carmel. He was always fiddling with his torch on a bicycle or other little piece. I remember him helping us sneak into movie theaters as he would josh the kid that he couldn't find his tickets. It worked every time. Loved his house and wife Jodi who was so loving and patient with him. Mandi has a painting my late wife did of her in the Modigliani style with a white iris. I will always cherish the times I spent with them. Bob Schatan with wife Mary "Papillon" Schatan, Papillon's Art Palace, Carmel, CA.
