Matthew Harris Obituary

MATTHEW WAYNE HARRIS, MD, of Clarkston, MI, born August 27, 1960, to Marquis and Norma Harris, passed away peacefully at home following a sudden cardiac event on April 23, 2025; aged 64. He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Mary Harris; his six children: Amanda, Josh, Marq (wife Manae, expectant with the first grandson), Micah, Anna (husband Tyler Acton), & Merrick; his parents Marquis & Norma Harris; & siblings Michael, Marq & Cindy Zink. He is preceded in death by his sister Carol.
Matthew graduated from Clarkston HS, attended Oral Roberts and Oakland, and obtained his MD from Wayne State University. He completed his residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Beaumont in Royal Oak. He considered his profession as a physician a calling. Through his 37 years of practice, first in WV and most recently in Grand Blanc, MI, he cared for each of his patients with the utmost empathy and devotion.
Matthew was a beloved son, husband, father, brother, doctor, and friend. He was a man of faith and modeled his life after Jesus. He was an active member at New Life Church in WV and Bridgewood Church in MI. Matthew was a gift to all those around him, sharing his wisdom, patience, and helping hands to anyone in need. He called every day, "one of the best days of my life" and we are comforted knowing he lived a full, content life, and is rejoicing in heaven. He would not have changed any part of his life, except to have a bit more time. Gone too soon, he will be missed.
A memorial will be held on Sat., May 3rd at Bridgewood Church in Clarkston, MI. Family and friends may visit at 3 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. service.

I didn't know of this until July 29th. I feel such a loss, and will miss Dr. Harris. He was dependable for good advice, and gave encouragement. A sense of humor, and positive encouragement was how he spoke with patients. My mom saw him, also, in his medical practice. He was always right, spot on with diagnosis, and treatment. I wish that he had many more years. However, this time was God's plan. We don't have to understand why.

I am so sorry about Dr. Harris passing. We were newer to him. About 2 yrs. But my husband started going this past year. He really enjoyed his stories. Both had relatives in WV. He was very proud of his family. He was a believer in God and that was a big thing to me. God Bless to all ❤

Every time I saw Dr. Matthew Harris, he always made me smile. I first met him as a new patient at his Clarkston Office, and moved as his patient to his Flint Office/Surgery. He was a special person and Dr. and I enjoyed hearing his stories about his family and knowledge. I feel for everyone in his family, friends, patients and for the world. God brought him here for a reason..... Blessings RIP Dr. Matthew. He will be missed

Matthew Harris was one of the finest men I have ever met in my life. He was my father’s doctor, and subsequently he became my personal physician. He was so helpful and supportive during my father’s death, and he helped me get through two hip replacements. This news has hit me like a sharp punch to my gut. He was always so positive, so calm, his professional demeanor was second to none. May you RIP my friend, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.

I recently learned about the sudden passing of my trusted and very special primary care physician, Dr. Harris. I was shocked for days. Not fully believing what I was reading. I wish I would have expressed to him what an impact he has made on my life.
It is so rare to find a doctor who truly cares about you and one that you can trust 100 percent. Dr. Harris always took the time to listen and I valued his opinion both medically and in relation to life in general. What a caring and remarkable man! He helped me profoundly in dealing with some heavy issues and I will be forever grateful. I hope and pray his family will find comfort in knowing how amazing and healing he was to so many. I will strive to live as Dr. Harris did.
My deepest sympathy to his family.

I was a patient of Doctor Harris. He was the replacement for Doctor Benton whom I thought the world of. So I didn´t know what to expect with his replacement, Doctor Harris. I have to say I am beyond saddened by this. He was just a very nice man and I always enjoyed our visits. He will most definitely be missed. So sorry for your loss. Sending my congratulations.

I’ve been a patient of Dr Harris since he joined Dr Benton’s practice. He was one of the most kind and caring doctors I’ve ever had. He would never make me feel rushed but would listen and answer all my questions. Not only was he kind and caring but he had a sense of humor which is important to me. Even after 80 years I still get nervous going to a doctor but as soon as he came into the room he would put you at ease with a friendly smile and a warm handshake. He didn’t treat me as a patient but as a friend. I’ll miss him very much. When I left for Florida last November I said I’ll see you in the spring but sadly I won’t. My heart and prayers go out to the family which he talked about so often and loved so much. I am so very sorry for your loss.

Dr. Harris is the best doctor I have ever had. He was more than transactional. He cared about his patients and would go to great lengths to ensure their wellness. I greatly appreciated him and all that he did for me. He will be missed. To his family and friends, I send my deepest condolences. I will keep you all in prayer during this time.

To say my heart breaks for everyone who knew and loved Dr. Harris would be an understatement. Dr. Harris entered my life as I was transitioning into adulthood—a time filled with uncertainty, pressure to succeed, and questions about my purpose in the world.

He not only provided the exact advice I needed, but did so in a way that was both eloquent and palatable for a naive twenty-something. His consistent presence in my life was truly a blessing, offering comfort and stability during such a tumultuous time.

I will never forget the profound role he played in my life and how much he contributed to my growth—both personally and professionally. I had long feared the day Dr. Harris would no longer be my physician. It deeply pains me that I never fully communicated my eternal gratitude.

The world would be a better place if people strived to be a little more like Dr. Harris each day. My deepest condolences to his family. He will be greatly missed.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family, I’m very sorry for your loss. I was a new patient and only saw him once, but I knew quickly we shared many common values and beliefs. I knew right away I had found my permanent primary care physician, he just seemed easy to trust and provided great service to his clients. Thank you, Doctor Harris, for all the help, kindness, and service you gave to our community.

I have been looking forward to my regular appointment soon with Dr. Harris and was stunned to hear of his passing. He was a marvelous physician who became a dear and caring friend. He told me he looked forward to his appointments with me, to the conversations he somehow found time for. He always had a question or a comment about something I had written, prefacing it by saying, "I've been wanting to ask you about..." ever I was not alone in the value I placed on our relationship--friends whom I recommended became patients and told me he treated them much the same way. I have had many family doctors in my 88 years but Dr. Harris was in a class apart--would that the world had more people like him, as physicians or in any role in life. He was an exemplary human being who enriched the lives of all fortunate enough to come into his orbit--certainly mine. His kindness and decency will live ever in my heart.

May 22, 2025

I just learned today of Dr. Harris' passing. In our short lives, we meet very few GOOD people who are also connected to us as doctors. Dr. Harris was one of them. I became his new patient last March. In one session, we talked about everything under the sun since both he and I had lived outside the USA. It was an amazing conversation. Dr. Harris didn't visit me as a patient, but rather as a human being, and gave a bit of life-changing advice. I could imagine him and I sitting in the backyard, drinking his favorite drink, and talking about life.
I am already sinking into the floor of his passing. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones.

I'm truly shocked and saddened by the loss of Dr. Harris. He was a such a wise, kind and understand doctor. I was blessed to have had him as my doctor, even if it was just for a short time. Dr. Harris was loved by many and, will be greatly missed. With Love and many blessings to ALL of his family, friends, patients, and co-workers.

I knew Dr Harris when he was practicing in Huntington WV. I am a pharmaceutical sales representative and I knew when I went to see Dr Harris and his staff I would learn more from him than he would learn from me. That being said, he always listened to whatever data or information I presented and asked thoughtful questions. My favorite memory, and a story I tell often, is as I was leaving his office one day I said "Have a great day" he replied "Oh I WILL!" To which I asked "how do you know, it´s still early!" He then replied "I choose to always have a great day and keep that attitude no matter what gets thrown at me".
Great advice for all of us!!

I just learned of Dr Harris’ passing and I’m so deeply sorry and stunned. While I was a patient of his we had become friends. We discuss his family, my family, current events and politics. He was the most kind, thorough and simply the best physician I’ve ever had. I’m shedding tears thinking of a life ended too soon and his family that I know he loved and was so very proud of.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Dr. Harris´s passing.

He was such a blessing in my life-not just as my doctor, but as a true counselor and source of comfort. During one of the most difficult times in my life, while my husband was ill and after his passing, Dr. Harris showed incredible compassion, understanding, and care. He did everything he could to ease my burden, and I will always be grateful for the time he took to talk and pray with me.

He often spoke with pride and love about his family, and it was clear that his faith guided everything he did. Dr. Harris lived his life with grace, kindness, and a sincere commitment to serving others. His presence made a lasting impact, and I will miss him tremendously.

Mary, I am so sorry to hear about Matthew. I remember when you first told me about meeting him 30+ years ago and how great of a guy he was. Then I had the honor of meeting him and asked him to be our family physician. He was such a caring and compassionate care giver. I couldn't have chosen a better MD for my kids. He always took the time to sit and talk ask about our kids and update me on your family. And of course I loved catching up with the family news. He was always so proud of you and your kids. Our doctor visits always felt more like I was visiting a friend instead. My heart goes out to you and know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Matt was a wonderful person. I often saw Matt in the doctors' lounge at St Mary's. We had many wonderful conversations. He clearly loved his family, coworkers, and patients. He took care of our daughter Sarah and us. When Sarah ran into serious medical problems after delivering, he was so reassuring and helped her through the crisis. We often talked about the kids. He was very loving in all he told me. Since we started seeing him as patients, it was obvious his office staff thought the world of him. After he left for Michigan, they still missed him.

I extend my deepest sympathy, and condolences to the family of Dr. Matthew Harris. A few years ago Dr. Harris became my primary physician. On my first visit I realized he was a man of faith, with much love for his family. He told me where he meet his wife, and they had six children. I admired his display of christian love. Dr. Harris prolonged my life by getting my blood pressure under control.
Dr. Harris was a great physician, for both medical and spiritual. It is a comfort to know he is rejoicing in heaven.

Dr.Harris was our family physician in Barboursville West Virginia. My son, Dylan Parker attended Covenant School with one of his children. He was such an awesome Christian man. He once told me that he worried more about our children´s spiritual well being than their physical health which impressed me. He will definitely be missed in the medical community. We need more Christian doctors like him. I am so sorry for the families loss. Each of you will be in my thoughts and prayers

Great friend and doctor, for 32 years. We share our families events, soccer games, “tecitos” and meals. Travel to Madrid (Spain), visiting my sister. Sad and joyful times. Forever will be remembered.

I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of Dr Harris. I first met him when I worked at St. Mary’s Hospital. In 2013 he became mine and my father’s family doctor in Barboursville. My father had Alzheimer’s and Vascular Dementia, he was always so kind and patient with him. When I started having panic attacks my daughter was with me and before I left , he asked if he could pray for me, and we all held hands as he said a beautiful prayer. I have never had a doctor ask to pray for me, and I probably never will again!
I never saw him without a smile. He will be missed by many. Prayers for his family and friends.

He was my Dr for many years in the Barboursville area and was always so patient with my kids and myself. When my husband died he sent a sympathy card that meant so much to me. I know he was a Christian and we’ll see him again. Prayers for his wife and children.

He was a true model of a good Christian; an embodiment of a true follower of Christ. He lived with compassion, love and without discrimination. As an international student at Marshall University, my meeting with Dr. Matthew Harris was truly a memorable one, always filled with very inspiring and great conversations. He was kind, caring and full of wisdom. He has touched my life in so many ways and my wife and I are grateful for the privilege of knowing him.

Keep in the presence of God till we meet again.

We love you!
