George M. Suarez, MD

Miami, Florida - Dr. George M. Suarez passed away peacefully on September 28, 2021. He was 66 years of age. Dr. Suarez was a long-time resident of Miami, Florida. He attended Christopher Columbus High School and from there attended college at Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio, on a football scholarship. He attended medical school at Dominica College in Portsmouth, Dominica, where he was an outstanding student and graduated with honors. Dr. Suarez interned at Cabrini Medical Center at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Illinois, from 1980-81 and completed a surgical residency at the same university from 1981-1982. Dr. Suarez then moved to New Orleans, where he served as a research fellow at the Primate Center in Covington, LA, from 1982-1983. Dr. Suarez completed a urology residency at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, from 1983-1987 under the tutelage of Dr. Raju Thomas, a world-renown urologist, and pioneer in shock wave lithotripsy and robotic surgery. Dr. Suarez then moved back to Miami, and joined the faculty of the University of Miami as an Assistant Professor of Urology. He remained in that position until founding the Miami Urology Institute. Dr. Suarez was the founder of the Miami Rehabilitation and Research Institute and the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis. Dr. Suarez was a founding member of U.S. HIFU, instrumental in providing a non-invasive treatment for prostate cancers. He provided treatment for thousands of men with prostate cancer in the Caribbean Islands, Canada, Bermuda, and Mexico. He presented his work on the use of high-intensity focused ultrasound to medical meetings in Europe and South America. Dr. Suarez authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles which appeared in medical journals in the United States, Europe, and South America. Dr. Suarez enjoyed travel and collected antiquities and curiosities from all over the world. Dr. Suarez is survived by his long-standing partner Ana Abislaiman and her children, his sister Mary Dezarraga, his brother Michael Suarez, his close friends Gus Plasencia, Rafael Estrella, Alan Goldfarb, Sarah Menendez, Neil Baum, Rene Garcia, and so many others. A mass honoring and celebrating the life of Dr. Suarez will be held at St. Brendan's Catholic Church on October 30, 2021, at 9:30 AM. He will be interned privately. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in his honor.

When all else had failed me, my daughter went online and found you. We tried have HIFU done in Canada, but to no avail. Finally in August of 1996 we came to Mexico and had HIFU! Sorry to hear that Dr Suarez has passed . A kind and wonderful physician ,who operated me while telling me that I would have a drink with him same day at the bar of the hotel in the Dominican Republic and keep my potency and how right he was . We were so very sorry to hear about Dr. Suarez. During a few years of our life we saw him for Buddy's cancer. Never had such a wonderful, sincere and caring Doctor before. He helped us through some very difficult times. May God bless his family and bring them peace. So very sorry. :'(
