I learned about Bonsai from Mary.and while I was not aware of her relatonship with Joe, or even that there was this beautiful man in her life,I feel that he was truly blessed in many ways. For instance to be able to express oneself as an artist is very rewarding, to see a scene that is meaningful to the photographer, and then to retain it via the camera's lense is a one of a kind picture. To take a little tree and to see how it will grow into a beautiful living Bonsai is surely a most wonderful gift. However, to me, his most obvious talent, for which I feel sure that he rests with a smile on his face is due to living his years with our absolutely wonderful Mary. .

Although I never got to know Joe that well, I always knew that when we were together, I was in the company of a person of intense talent, a loving (bonsai) personality, and a man who loved life, and sharing it with all people around him...He will be long remembered, and dearly missed.

Joe never wanted to be called a master, when do you become a master?
Do you think Joe would mind if we called him a master now?
Probably not...
Anyways we have a lot of trees to trim and work to be done, when do you think you'll be back in to check on us Joe?
Love ya miss ya...

I have known Joe only a few years, yet he shared his bonsai knowledge quietly, freely, and happily. I will miss him at Miami Tropical Bonsai. Joe, may God protect you and take you to a heavenly bonsai garden.

I will always have fond memories of Joe from all the conventions we went to from the 70's and 80's and meetings at gatherings thoughout the years. He was allways ready to share his knowledge of bonsai with any one who was interested. He will be sorely missed by me and by all who knew him.

We met Joe Samuels in the 1970's at the Dade County Youth Fair where his Bonsai earned our admiration forever. While much will be said about Joe's many great artist talents those talents were, in my mind, multiplied many fold by his Humanitarian and Humble traits. Those traits made Joe a person we always looked forward to being around and our only regret is for the many get-togethers planned but not accomplished. Joe will be sorely missed but never forgotten.
Joe left his mark.

In 1998 I visited my first Bonsai Show at Fairchild Gardens in Miami. There I saw two Bonsai trees that impressed me forever. One was a tree designed and collected by Joe. It was a Florida Buttonwood that resembled a bow tie. There and then I realized that Bonsai was an art form. I will thank Joe forever for opening the door of an amazing hobby for me.

A good friend and mentor, and strong supporter of the Gulfstream Bonsai Collection at the Morikami Museum. Fortunately, I saw him last at the 2007 Hatsume Fair, last February, in that exhibit where he rewarded me with the only pay we get or need to maintain it–encouragement and compliments. I will miss Joe even though I did not see him often, it was always a joy to do so.
