Marion Sylvia Sutton

1932 - 2018

Marion (Mimi) Sylvia Sutton nee Snyder, artist and loving mother, passed away on June 22, 2018. Marion was born in Pittsburgh, PA on May 28, 1932 and grew up in Westview, PA, the only child of Alice Isenberg Snyder and Ralph Funston Snyder. When she was just thirteen years old, she got her first part time job working at the Westview Amusement Park where she met Elmer Sutton, her future husband of nearly 66 years. In 1951, Mimi and Elmer were married, eventually settling in Miami, Florida where they became parents to five sons, Wayne, Gary, Gregory, Warren, and Scott. Upon Elmer Sutton's retirement from the Miami Beach Police Force, Mimi and Elmer, along with sons Warren and Scott, moved to DeLand, Florida where they resided until their deaths. Mimi was a gifted painter and sculptor, with a lifelong passion for art. She began taking painting classes at Miami-Dade College, and studied under renowned sculptor, Duane Hanson. Mimi's favorite medium was acrylic, but she was versatile and worked with oil and water colors, as well as doing etching, printing, and paper-cut art. Her paintings have hung in a variety of locations around DeLand. Mimi also taught art, giving a workshop at Museum of Art—DeLand as well as private lessons. Mimi was also a wonderful cook and baker, a warm hostess, whose home was always open and welcoming. She was never happier than when the entire family got together and filled every room of the house. Mimi was a lifelong Methodist and a member of First United Methodist of DeLand. Mimi is survived by her five sons named above, daughters-in-law Karen and Lynn Sutton, ten grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. Services were held at First United Methodist of DeLand on Thursday, June 28.
