SIMON COHEN Obituary

COHEN, SIMON LUIS, 60, was the son of the late Bernie and Ofelia Cohen. He passed away peacefully at home after battling from lung cancer on August 17, 2010. His life was about the love he had for his family. He was a devoted husband and father. He is survived by Becky (Bebita), his wife, his beautiful children Ellie and Bernie, his dear brother Jeffrey, Uncle Gedalia, and Aunt Fleurette. He will always be loved and missed dearly by his family and dear friends. We will remember Simon wearing his stylish Guayabera, Panama hat, and having a Cuban or two his front pocket. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to TBS - Cuban Hebrew Congregation. I am so deeply saddened to learn of Simon's passing, albeit four months later. I wish I had known sooner.

Simon told me he was fighting cancer when we ran into each other and embraced at the Apple Store earlier this year, then lit-up like the Fourth of July when describing his love of family. When he wrote me in May, "I am doing okay. Just got back from cruise with the kids," it appeared his health was improving. Now this. It's heartbreaking.

The SImon with whom I reconnected was the same gentle, easy going, unpretentious and good-spirited Simon who spread sunshine and laughter during our teen years in Miami Beach. But even better. And wiser. And so very grateful for his family and life blessings that his health woes seemed more a manageable inconvenience than an imminent threat.

Simon was a Beach kid, through and through -- forever family -- which is why seeing each other again after so many years felt as warm as yesterday and as comfortable as an old pair of shoes. Simon Cohen was the real thing. A timeless, authentic friend, who reinforced his affection with the words, "Love you." Those were his last words to me, and they are now my parting words to him: Love you, Simon. Be with God.

My condolences to the family he so openly adored and good wishes for your renewed happiness in the coming year.

Becky may God give you the strength to continue, and fulfill your children's life. Simon is not here in prescence but you know he is and will always be by your side in spirit. You guys made a beautiful family and he will always be remembered. Although I didn't know him as well he was very charismatic and I always remember him with a smile. God bless you, Ellie and Bernie. Love The Richards family......

Simon was always a great guy! He told it like it was, and always helped people he saw making strides. We hung around a lot as bachelors before he married. We'd hang around NMB and antagonize our mutual friend Lynn Scott. May Simon rest in peace, he lived a full life.

Dear Becky
Simon and I have been friends for over 20 years. I have never met a more gentle peace loving man. My prayers go out to you and Ellie and Bernie I know he felt about all of you. When I would ask him to show me recent photos he would light up like a light bulb. I loved and will miss him.

BECKY, although we have never met I consider Jeffrey one of my dearest and closet friends and I offer my condolences and prayers to you, Ellie, and Bernie; from what I heard from Jeffrey, Simon fought a very hard battle because of the love he has for you and his family. I know this because my wife Susie is fighting the same battle for the same reasons. I hope you will find peace some day while remembering all the good times you had with Simon. God bless.
