Steven Chaykin Obituary

CHAYKIN, STEVEN, 56, of Miami Beach died Tuesday, July 30, 2008, in an accident in Aspen, Colorado. A beloved spouse to Melissa and father to Sydney, Steven is also survived by sister Robin, brother Robert and his father, David. Born October 10, 1951, in Miami Beach, he grew up in South Florida where he attended Nova High School in Davie. A prominent lawyer and respected community leader, he loved the law, the Miami Hurricanes and, most passionately, his wife and child. Any visitor to his office at the Akerman Senterfitt firm, where he was a shareholder, would see the many photographs of his family and be regaled by stories of Sydney's beautiful voice and Melissa's strong spirit. He received his undergraduate and law degrees at the University of Miami. His legal career of more than three decades included a stint as an Assistant United States Attorney in South Florida where he spearheaded many of that offices most important and difficult prosecutions, and led the highly-regarded public corruption unit. As an accomplished defense lawyer he was regularly recognized by his peers as one of the finest lawyers in the nation. He also served the Bar and his community as a volunteer on various boards including the U. M. Citizens Board (as President), the Miami Beach Housing Authority (as Chairman), the Florida Bar Board of Governors and numerous arts groups and charities. After his family, friends and career, Steven loved a glass of reserve cabernet, a hearty political debate (he was a proud Democrat), exercising, and camping with Sydney. He loved to laugh, and could dish it out and take it, but never with a mean spirit. Stevens personal qualities of integrity, loyalty and kindness made him a good friend to many. He was the consummate gentleman and generous to a fault. Full of life, passion and infectious enthusiasm, he will leave a positive and enduring mark on all who knew him and he touched. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the "Steven Chaykin Fellowship" in Criminal Justice at the Center for Ethics and Public Service at the U. M. Law School or to the "Sydney Chaykin College Fund" and mailed to the Attention of Sam Rabin, Eastern National Bank Building, 799 Brickell Plaza, Suite 606, Miami, FL 33131. Services will be held in Stevens memory Monday, August 4, 2008 at 11:30 am, at Temple Beth Sholom, 4144 Chase Avenue, Miami Beach. Interment will follow at Mt. Sinai Cemetery, Miami. He was genuinely unique and will always be honored as a hero. My experience at Chaykin, Karlan, and Jacobs was more than just employment; it felt like joining a second family that embraced and nurtured me. Steven was the heart of this family. My most cherished memory? Catching him at the copier in flip-flops, hurriedly making last-minute copies to help us, yet always keeping his cool with unmatched intelligence and compassion. He motivated me to join the Big Brother/Sister program as a "Big Sister." Truly, he was the best "Big Brother" the program could ever wish for, and that's how he was perceived by everyone who knew him. He inspired me to be brave and stand with intelligence in any setting. He was the embodiment of kindness, a spirit so giving that time with him felt like a present. His legacy will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who had the fortune to know him. He is greatly missed.

As one of the many cousins within the Chaykin family (daughter of beloved Saul and Grace Chaykin) the depth of sadness of losing Steven is beyond comprehension. Fondest memories of many years ago, are from the early 1950’s, visiting with Aunt Mimi, Uncle Davey, Steven and Robert (Robin was not yet born) in Brooklyn, New York where we all lived to over 50 years later…visiting with Steven, his special wife, Melissa and their beautiful daughter, Sydney in their lovely Miami Beach home.

Our lives are so beautiful, so fragile, so intricately joined to others in our paths. Steven has left a beautiful legacy that will always live on in our family.

Melissa and Sydney…may Steven’s life be honored by all he loved. May his memory be cherished for all he gave. May your hearts be comforted by all you shared.

With our deepest sympathy and love,

Sandy (nee Chaykin) Roseman and Larry Roseman

Steven was the quintessential man, husband, father, son, brother, nephew, cousin, friend, attorney, scholar and so much more.
Steven loved life and his family passionately. He adored Melissa and Sydney. We remember his joy when Sydney was born. He told me his life was complete.
As the oldest cousin and his babysitter, earliest memories go all the way back to Steven as an infant and caring young man. In his busy adult life he always made time for thoughtful gestures. We were always so proud of his accomplishments and the good and honorable life he lived.
Melissa and Sydney, may you be comforted and embraced by loving family and friends to see you through this difficult time.
Our family deeply mourns Steven's passing. May his memory be a blessing.

I will be there with you and Sydney to celebrate his life, along with countless friends, colleagues, and the many people whose lives he touched. Cherish the memories and just know how blessed you are to have such sweet ones. With love and heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

Dear Chaykin family,

We are stunned at this news and so sorry for your loss. Steve was a great guy. He bought flowers from us, for his wife, almost every Friday. His favorites were the long stemmed peach roses called Osianas and he would demand that we save him a bunch, and always appreciated our dropping them off in his office when he wasn't around. Downtown Miami will not be the same without him. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
