Margaret Foster Obituary

Margaret Lee Brown Foster, 84, accomplished artist, singer, songwriter and fashion model, died peacefully in the home of her daughter and son-in-law Tuesday morning, Feb. 24, 2009.
Even as her illness inexorably progressed, she never lost her sparkling sense of humor and positive outlook. Maggie was born May 29, 1924 in Sherman to Margaret Etta Wallace Brown and Hubert Lee Brown M.D., a noted surgeon. She frequently sang on the KRRV radio station before graduating Sherman High School in 1940. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. for two years before transferring to the University of Oklahoma where she became a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
During World War II, she traveled with a USO-sponsored tour with the famous Tex Beneke orchestra as a singer and songwriter to military bases across Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas. In late 1945, after receiving her B.A. degree in portrait painting from OU, she moved to Oklahoma City and worked as a fashion artist.
She married Riley Payton Foster, a medical school graduate, June 7, 1947, and relocated to Quebec for his internship at Montreal General Hospital. Over the next few years, Maggie became a top photo and runway fashion model in Canada known for her uncanny resemblance to movie star Lauren Bacall. In 1947, she and Dr. Foster relocated to Dallas where he served his residency at Methodist Hospital and Maggie continued fashion modeling.
In 1950, they had moved to Fort Worth where Dr. Foster went into medical practice and her only child, Margaret Kristen, was later born. Circumstances changed when Dr. Foster was drafted into Korean War service, serving in the Air Force as a captain and chief of surgery at Ellington Air Force Base (now Ellington Field) near Houston. After USAF service, Dr. Foster trained through Baylor College of Medicine and with Drs. Michael DeBakey and Denton Cooley in cardiovascular surgery.
In September 1961, during Hurricane Carla, the Fosters moved into their River Oaks home. After Dr. Foster's untimely death in June 1967, Maggie continued residing on Pelham Drive while working in the Neiman-Marcus boutique at the Shamrock Hilton Hotel. In later years she worked at David Webb Jewelers until retiring in 1988.
Her devoted daughter Kristen Foster Perry and son-in-law John Perry survive her as do grandchildren Margaret Alison Adger Moorhead and her husband Gary Moorhead; Lee Kurth Jameson and Robert Butler Jameson; and great-grandson Cole Scott Moorhead. Cousins Margaret Clark Nelms of Sugar Land and Judy Clark Staley of Rockport also survive her.
Maggie was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church; the Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumni Association; the SPCA; the Harris County Medical Auxiliary; a board member and set designer of Theater, Inc.; and patron of the Junior League Tearoom. She leaves hundreds of original oil paintings as legacy to her lifelong passion for art.
Her memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Monday, March 2 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church followed by a reception in the church parlor. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted to the Houston SPCA.

Dear Kristen ---

George, Elizabeth and I just got home last night from the Spring Break trip to Paris that we all talked about in your living room with your beautiful mom. I was so thrilled to find her small painting and your dear note when we walked in the door, and want to thank you for welcoming me so graciously into your house and into Maggie's rich and amazing last few weeks and days. She and Gary and I talked many times about the uncanny sense of closeness we had from the first time we all met after moving to Pelham in 1993. We always so loved to open our windows or walk out into our back yard and be able to hear her singing or playing great music, and we began years ago trying to surprise each other with "new" music at Christmas or any other time, really, that any of us ran onto something we thought we'd all enjoy. She was truly a gift and a treasure, and I hope there'll be a time one of these days when we can visit again. I would so love to see some of the wonderful pictures I know you shared with people who loved and admired her --- and I hope you will let me know what I may be able to do, from next door, to help you in any way I can at all.

Please phone or email me any time.
And thank you deeply again, for sharing your extraordinary mother with such warmth and grace. It was so clear how happy she was to be with you, and how loved and cared for she felt.

Warmest thoughts of you, and prayers for your peace.

Kristen: My heart is so sad and I, like so many others, will miss Maggie very much. She was such fun and always wanted to visit and catch up on what was going on in life. What a joy she was to all who were lucky enough to know her. Kris, you have been the best daughter ever and Maggie loved you so much. I hope that the knowledge of this love will give you some peace. Hugs, Marilyn

Kristen,
Words cannot express how dynamic your mother was or how much I loved her.
You were in every conversation. She loved you beyond loving you.
I will miss my "Maggie" forever. I am so sorry that she is gone and so happy that she is no longer in pain.

Kris and Family, My childhood and adult life are the richer because of your Mother! The memories I have of your home, filled with laughter and singing will grow in my heart each day. Maggie was the ULITMATE GLAMOUR QUEEN, MOVIE STAR, AND YOUR BEST FRIEND. She was a mom to so many. I am privileged to have been in that number. There is a place of quiet rest near to the heart of God...she is there now. Hallelujah!

My Dear Kristen,
The obituary is a beautiful tribute to your mom. I have treasured memories of our trips with Maggie to Sherman to visit Marnie. She was a devoted daughter just as you always were. I loved going to Marnie's grand house. We would play with old dolls and torment some girl down the street. And of course, the evening meals at Lubys and One's A Meal became a regular activity at your house and mine. I love you and miss you. Be strong and let God's love enfold you.

Kristen, I only met your mother once, in the early 70s when she was Jan's landlady, but she made an impression on me--beautiful, creative and witty. I trust you and your family will be comforted in realizing her freedom.

With much affection,

Kris and family, I'm so sorry to hear about Maggie's passing. She was the personification of style in my estimation. She was larger than life and I was in awe of her through our childhood. I'm sorry I didn't get to see her before she took off from this sorry old world. I made a donation to the ASPCA, but it didn't allow me to make that donation in Maggie's name or on her behalf. I think it's so sweet and really a surprise, considering you never had any pets growing up. I will say prayers that her transition to the spirit realm will be smoothe. Love you, dear.

Dear Kristen, What a remarkable woman. she was beautiful both inside and out. Your mother was always happy to see me. And everyone who approached her was always happy to see Maggie. She was truly interested in me and my family. Everytime I saw her (last at St Luke's), she wanted to know everything I had been doing. What a mind. I dont think I ever told you this, but Maggie was a role model for me as I became a single working mother. She did it with such panache. And you, Kristen, a more devoted daughter there never was. I love you, and am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Love, Susan
