Miles Mathis Obituary

VERNON MATHIS, JR. Miles Vernon Mathis, Jr., of Denison, passed peacefully from this life at the age of 100 on February 1, 2024. He was born, raised and lived in Denison most of his life. He was a beloved husband and devoted father to two daughters. He attended Golden Rule School and graduated from Denison High School. He served in the South Pacific with the United States Navy during World War II from 1942 until 1945. Most of his working years were spent on Main Street in Denison where he and his wife, Mozelle, owned and operated Myles Variety Store and then Spencer's Furniture. Vernon was a member of the Lions Club, Billie Mosse Masonic Lodge and the First Christian Church of Denison. He is predeceased by his wife, daughter Donna Mozelle Mathis, brother Early Donnell Mathis, mother Callie Dona McCarty Mathis and father Miles Vernon Mathis, Sr. He is survived by his daughter Kathryn Anne Mathis Cooley of Bloomfield, Connecticut. On November 30, 2023, Vernon was honored at Grayson Court Assisted Living with a 100th birthday party and celebration of life that he himself was thrilled to attend. The Mayor proclaimed it Miles Vernon Mathis Day in Denison and he was presented with an American flag by a local veterans group. He left an indelible mark on family, friends and residents of the Grayson Court community where he was lovingly cared for by staff and Centric Home Health Hospice. Vernon Mathis will be laid to rest alongside his wife Mozelle at Fairview Cemetery in Denison. A service of remembrance will be held at the cemetery chapel on Wednesday, April 10, at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment. The Rev. Drew Svendsen of the First Christian Church of Denison will officiate.

Mr Mathis had the most magical variety store ever and he was kind enough to allow a child to browse to her hearts content. It was a thrill to go there. I will always remember his quiet kindness as well as his wife's. A wonderful memory of a great man. God Bless
