Joyce Evelyn Petersen

1924 - 2016

Joyce Evelyn Petersen, 92, of Toppenish, Wash. died at home on October 17, 2016. Joyce was born April 27, 1924, to Dallas Hensley and Evelyn Andrews in Monroe, Wash. She married Herbert Joseph Caffrey on October 4, 1941, and lived in Snohomish, Wash., where their daughter, Shirley Ann, was born. She later divorced Herbert and married George Petersen in 1966. Joyce was a strong businesswoman. She owned and operated Stowell Lumber Company and then later Mr. Handyman Lumber, building houses until she retired. Joyce loved to grow flowers in her beautiful yard, where she spent many hours after retiring. She used her flowers to make lovely arrangements for the Sunday church services. Joyce was very dedicated to the Lord. She enjoyed working on her family genealogy. She began caring for the baptismal clothes for her church in 1992 and did so until she could no longer do so. Joyce was able to serve as a Stake Missionary three different times. The first two were in the North Seattle Stake Mission in 1957 and in 1958. She then served the third time in 1970 to 1971. Joyce also provided over 16 years of service at the Seattle temple and was deeply saddened when she could not continue the Lord's work in the temple. Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Moreine Berry, Peggy Story and Jack Hensley; her husbands; and her daughter. Survivors include her grandchildren, Margaret (Donald) Meyers, Linda Morris, Susan (Greg) Wilt, Nathan Morris and Amy (Clarence) Hoptowit; and her great-grandchildren, Edward Eaton, Jessica Marshall, Marie Meyers, Jeremy Eaton, Nathaniel Meyers, Joseph Meyers, Samuel Meyers, James Wilt, Justin Wilt, and Kiarra Hoptowit. A viewing will be conducted in Shoultes Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 9215 51st Ave. NE in Marysville, on Tuesday, Oct. 25th, at 10:00 AM, with the funeral following at 11:00 AM.
