Kaylene Powell Obituary

Kaylene Grace (Paetow) Powell

Kaylene Grace (Paetow) Powell, 69, died at home on October 20, 2012, after a six-month struggle with cancer. She was born on December 27, 1942, to Louise and Bill Paetow in Astoria, Oregon.
She will be particularly remembered for her compassion, care giving, sense of humor, talent as a mimic and story teller, musicality, love of animals, and avid interest in world, national, and local affairs.
Kaylene grew up in Vancouver, Washington, and was a 1960 graduate of Hudson's Bay High School where she excelled as a thespian, and served in various capacities as a student government officer and as the editor of her school yearbook. Her classmates awarded her its "Best Citizen" award. After high school graduation, she was a member of the first 2-year registered nursing program in the State of Washington (Clark College, 1960-62). After college graduation, she worked as a registered nurse for many years in the Vancouver-Portland area, in Corvallis, and in Everett. She also taught part-time for Edmonds Community College. Kaylene lived life fully and will be very much missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Barbara Kinga Diane Nehler; brother, Chris Paetow; and niece, Rachel Hale.
She is survived by her loving husband, Terry Powell of Everett; daughter, Kristin Tennant of Snohomish; son, Dan Nehler (Shawn) of West Virginia; son, Dale Nehler of Vancouver, Washington; sister, Mary Hale (Don) of Everett; nieces, Liz Hale of Bellevue, and Sarah Palaia of Havana, Cuba; six cherished and very much loved grandchildren, Chelsea, Austin, Kaylen, Craye, Jacob, and Nathan; one great-grandchild, Kaylee; and two great-grand nieces, Margaret and Violet. She is also survived by her devoted dog, Buddy.
A private remembrance gathering will be held some time later this fall.
One of Kaylene's last wishes was that others know how much she appreciated the care and support provided by family members and Hospice.
Donations to Providence Hospice and Home Care of Snohomish County, 2731 Wetmore, Everett 98201, in Kaylene's memory, are welcome.

I have considered Kay one of my best friends since meeting in Prospect in 1969. We had some great, fun times over the years and I cannot believe she is no longer with us. My sympathy and condolences to her kids. Please keep in touch and stop by whenever you are in Vancouver. Celeste Hutchison

Kaylene and I were best friend cousins all the years of our youth. That closeness never ended even though our paths crossed less frequently in our adulthood. I love and miss her. She was funny and lovely in every way. I grieve for all of us who are left with only memories.

I will always have fond memories of our time spent together in nursing school and after graduation.

I am very saddened to hear of the passing of Kaylene. She and I were close classmates and friends in grades 7 through high school (Lewis Junior High and Hudson's Bay). She was always one classy girl and we shared many great times over those 6 years. While I haven't seen her in many years, (certainly missed seeing her at the 50th reunion in 2010), I cannot reminisce those years without thinking of her even to this day. My prayers go out to her family.

Kaylene was one of the first nurses I met at Providence as a student and new graduate in Labor and Delivery. She was a wonder. When I saw "K-Pow" on the report sheet, I knew someone had my back, and that I'd also LAUGH that shift. I also knew that when I saw her distinctive handwriting on a patient I was taking over on, I would find a patient that had been in very good hands. It's been several years since I have seen her, but she shaped my practice positively forever. I hope her family and friends can find some comfort in knowing that she made a difference in my life too.

Loving memories of your childhood will remain with me always. I cherish our last visit at Carol and Mel's 65th anniversary. You looked so pretty and your smile was, as it always was, so charming and radiant. God be with you until we meet again. I love you, Aunt Laura
