Gary Evans McCormick, a long-standing beacon of compassion and wisdom in the community, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025, in St. Joseph, Mich., at the age of 91. He was a dedicated father, brother, friend, poet, and veteran who served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War.
Gary was born on Sept. 30, 1933 in Detroit, Mich., and was preceded in death by his loving wife Jean Marie McCormick (Wittenberg), whom he married on Sept. 3, 1955, his parents Melvin and Florence McCormick and his siblings, Fay and Bill McCormick. He is survived by his brother, Chris McCormick, and his six children – Theresa (Bruce) Lesnick, Gary (Kathleen) McCormick, Bernadette (Dale) Hill, Ann (Robert) Woodhouse, Paul (Doris) McCormick and Mary Jean (David) Taylor, along with 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Gary attended Sacred Heart High School in Dearborn, Mich., and went on to earn an associate's degree at the University of Detroit. This laid the foundation for his impressive career. He initially made his mark in public relations at the Ford Motor Company and later shared his gift for communication through his role in classified advertising sales for The Herald-Palladium newspaper for 24 years.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Allred Funeral Home in Berrien Springs, Mich. A public visitation will be held at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Berrien Springs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, June 20. A funeral mass will follow the visitation at the church. Following the mass there will be a burial at Rose Hill Cemetery in Berrien Springs.
