Cecil Edgar Wooten
December 18, 1931 - August 18, 2025
Raleigh, North Carolina - Cecil Edgar (Ed) Wooten passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025 at Transitions Hospice House at the age of 93 following complications from a stroke. Ed was born December 18, 1931 in Rome, Alabama. Ed lived a remarkable life defined by hard work, unwavering generosity, and deep devotion to his loved ones.
The son of the late Henry Alvin and Dovie Brooks Wooten, Ed grew up alongside 4 brothers and 3 sisters, predeceased by most of his siblings except Opal Lunsford, Edna Unger and Odis Wooten, who survive him. He was a loyal brother and kept strong ties to his family throughout his life. In his early twenties Ed married Nancy Rippey Wooten, lovingly embracing her and her two young daughters Susan Gainey Baldschun and Virginia Gainey Weant as his own. Ed's dedication to his family knew no bounds; he was always generous to a fault, extending to care and support to all who needed it.
Ed served his country with pride in the United States Air Force during the Korean War before attending Florida State University. Following graduation, he enjoyed a successful career with National Cash Register Company and retired after many years of loyalty. Retirement did not slow Ed; instead, it inspired him to establish the Ed Wooten Insurance Agency where his dedication earned the respect and gratitude of many clients and colleagues. He was inducted into the Blue Cross NC Hall of Fame in 2013.
Outside of work and family, Ed dedicated much of his time to helping others. He was an active member and past president of the Raleigh Host Lions Club, chaired the club's horse show for many years, volunteered at Camp Dogwood for the blind as well as their annual fishing trip to the Outer Banks. He was involved in their ongoing broom sale and if you ever needed one, he always had one in his trunk to sell. As a member of Toastmasters, Ed fostered connections and communication within his community. He was also an avid tennis player, a passion he carried well into his later years.
In addition to his parents, Ed was preceded in death by his wife Nancy and survived by his daughters, Susan Baldschun (Kent), Ginny Weant (Dan), grandchildren, Jane Harper (Ben), Emily Pettit, John Baldschun (Jill), Peter Baldschun (Kate), Patrick Weant (Olivia), Aaron Weant (Hope), Kyrie Furr (Jonathan) and 16 great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ed's honor to Camp Dogwood, North Carolina Lions, Incorporated, PO Box 39, Sherrills Ford, NC 28673. Although he was only there for a short time, we would like to thank the staff of Transitions Hospice House for their care during this time. Also, to the staff at Swift Creek Health Center for their love and care while he was a resident there.
The family held a private funeral service.
